Silver Efex Pro 2 is the way to go if you are looking for excellent FREE software for B&W conversions. The NIK software suite used to cost $350 or so, but has been available free since March 2016, after being acquired by Google. I’ve been using the programs, including Silver Efex, and they are excellent, and plug easily into Photoshop CC (and possible some earlier) PS versions.
