WPS is free with a little ad at app startup. But compatibility to MS products is much much better.

The free lookalike / work-alike / supports the MS file formats (*) office suites that I have used for years are Open Office and Libre Office. They are plenty good enough most of the time, but despite supporting the file formats, these on occasion won’t do everything 1:1 identical to the result you would obtain from, say, the real Excel or Word. And, once in awhile, that can be a problem. If Ability added anything significant to the mix, I might be interested in having another alternative. However, some of the reviews and comments lead me to think that this is not the case.

(* which have themselves changed, over the years)

Why do Ability have to obfuscate the real download? I don’t want to HAVE to connect to the internet every time I want to install this. I want control of MY PC.. This is bad enough that if I can’t find it I wont use it. (Old laptop with no internet access)

After the initial install, immediately running for the first time I received an alert from hitman pro that it had intercepted an attack from abwrite.exe. Violation is calling ACLayers.DLL IAT funcptr kernel32.dll!getModuleHandleA. Then proceeds to list the Stack Trace.

Will follow up on my end and post any findings here.

[@BillyB] Still searching but seems the more important part is that it detected it with its IAF or Import Address Table Filtering

If anyone is looking for a free Office alternative which is relatively light and fast, I highly recommend SoftMaker FreeOffice. I’m not a power user, but I’ve used it for years without any problems. It has a classic unobtrusive interface.
