To overcome the problem of the installer being in Russian, I have downloaded the installer from the Genery site. The registration key supplied worked for me with this Genery download.

MASSIVE fail; installer launches in Russian. Really? In the midst of all the concerns about Russian hacking.

    Erased immediately from my drive.

Thank you, Shareware folks for trying, and generally succeeding.

    Loyal user.

Having found the installation file here to be in Russian, I went to the Genery site and downloaded the setup from there.
That version does ask which language you want to install in.
Choosing English, you then have the option to install on your normal HDD or on a USB drive. Whey-hey!
I opted for this latter option – only to find that the key supplied by SoS is not valid for a USB drive installation!
    How unhelpful is that!
Anyway, with two strikes against it, I’m afraid it’s ‘Revo Uninstaller’ time. Sorry Russians – it’s a hard way to learn.

Downloaded from their website ( genery.com ), Installed and tried to import a .ged file, acted like it imported but I could not get it to actually show any thing, it was most likely User Error , But I uninstalled anyway.

As I don’t know Cyrillic, I downloaded the file directly from Genery, installed and used the serial number from shareware on sale. It worked PERFECTLY!
To those worried about the nefarious “Russian hacks,” think about this: If an evil Russian hacker wanted to hack anyone they would give you an English version not a Russian one.
Genery is a legitimate company. As a writer, I’ve used an earlier version to make bios and timelines for all my characters.
This was obviously an innocent mistake.

While the installation is in Russian, the position of the buttons is the same as in English installers.

I was able to install and once you finish the installation and start the program, it then asks you for the language.

Being from the US, I’m wary of Russian (and Chinese) software. But to be fair, it seems much of the world is equally wary of any software from the US. My best advice on this is keep private matters encrypted, make frequent backups (and keep the last 3 or 4 around, just in case), disconnect your backup drive(s) when not in use, and enjoy the computer you paid for. There’s no such thing as safety or privacy any more, let’s move on.

This program impressed me last time it was given here, though I haven’t had a chance to really try it out. I’ll grab the update while I can, thanks SOS and Genery.

Learning can be difficult for many people. The giveaway here states clearly that it’s for a 1-computer license, so expecting the key provided here to support a portable license is not reasonable (note that this license difference is described in the agreement you must accept before you get to the point in the installer where you can change the default single-computer installation to a portable one). Since the application is try-before-you-buy the fact that the installer (the Genery and SoS installers are now identical) offers to install the portable option for a trial is hardly surprising.

So that’s one strike for them and one for you.
