This is VERY good. I have a standard pdf document I use to test and assess so-called pdf converters and they usually fail miserably. In this case Coolmuster has done very well and the resultant document is actually usable.

My standard pdf document was created using Word and converted to pdf by Adobe acrobat professional. It contains a complicated table structure with data in it.

Coolmuster’s conversion back to Word only failed in 3 minor areas
    1. some of the cell borders were missing – in about 3 places
    2. The bullets in one bulleted list came out as funny squares instead of the normal round bullet
    3. There were more “cells” in the table in the converted document than in the original. E.g for a 3 line sentence that spanned 3 rows in the original Word document (where these 3 rows were merged ), then in the converted document these came out as 1 line in each of 3 rows. So the appearance is the same, but not as convenient to edit the 3 line text and have it adjust automatically to the space.

So all in all a good converter to Word. (I did not test converting to other formats)

The converter I usually use is UniPdf – it has the same problem with the bullets, and also some problems with borders, but slightly different problems – more double borders than borders missing, but it doesn’t have the third problem with extra cells added.

A bit of a review, which only really applies to my use, but may apply to others with similar needs. I wanted this for creating Excel files from PDFs. This is something for which I have looked far and wide with little luck. Newer versions of Adobe Acrobat have it, but it’s not very good. This is fairly good. Each page of the PDF is created as a separate tab, which is really not what I wanted. Maybe there’s a setting for it, but couldn’t find it. The focus here was on formatting, which is fairly good, but not great. Columns that are clearly lined up in the original are wavy all over the place. Of course, what I really want, though, is not formatting but the ability to use the data in columnar formats. That is, the whole reason for converting to Excel is to be able to use it as a spreadsheet. This fails at that. There are too many merged cells which affect one’s ability to remove unnecessary cells. Also, try, just try to sum a column. Nope, won’t work. Why would anyone really need to convert to Excel if the data is unusable?
