I’m not sure I fully understand the benefits of this software.

    * I get that it stops cross-tab trackers, but I can do that by closing unwanted tabs and I can quickly open them again via bookmarks.

    * It has ad-blockers. So do my browsers.

    * I can see that multiple workspaces might be useful, but are all the apps in the workspaces constantly running? If so, then I’d have a memory problems, same as I get when I have too many tabs opened.

    * Making desktop apps from websites is fine – but again why not just bookmark them?. Making the app open folders/files on my pc would me much more productive for me. Launchy works well for recent files, but if I’m looking for that presentation from 3 weeks ago (that has been pushed to the back of the “recently opened” queue), if it were a click away that would be useful.

If someone could give some real-world examples of why this is better than (say) Bookmark OS, I’d appreciate it.

[ @Ashraf] the SOS page for this product has the wrong link for the vendor, it should be:

    [ https ://webcatalog. app/ ]

The current version there is v25.8.0. Windows 7 and later, 64-bit from the website above ( the SOS-distributed version is v25.5.2 ).

    – – – – – – – – – –

[@Colin] YOU tell US after exploring this and sharing.

I note that Google Chrome is a memory hog and too many tabs open eventually locks up, so when I am doing research and have 5, 10, 20, or more tabs for one project, and maybe 3 Chrome windows open with 20+ tabs each, I just commit suicide to try and then also open my email, or even open SOS on top of all that, so having my email and SOS as separate apps makes sense.

On the one hand, we’ve ALL been trying to manage too many tabs in browsers, Tab Mix Plus for Firefox is no longer functioning, tab-grouping in Chrome was a baad design bust from the start, so I open Chrome, Firefox, AND Opera, and then Internet Explorer when I only need one download, and then close it, NONE of the big vendors is addressing our using the web as an extended library search and reference resource – EXTENDED.

On the other hand, Quang Lam, the programmer of Web Catalog Plus, suggests offloading tabs to separate “apps”.

    – Access to apps in their rated catalog of ~600 websites
    – Create custom apps from any websites
    – Add Unlimited workspaces
    – Block ads & trackers
    – Attach to menu bar or taskbar
    – Inject CSS/JS code
    – Choose browser engine

What say we try it out and report back in – that’s what we’re here for.

Thanks for exploring this and sharing.

The first time I open WebCatalog Plus it prompts to apply an update. Should the program be upgraded to new version before registration?

    Where is the Linux version?

That said, the sampled app has no savvy from the browser it’s made from, no spell check, no right-click context menus, no ability to add in Grammarly and Print Friendly, and so on.

And I say “sampled” because I was not able to successfully “install” as web site as an app ( Windows 7 64 Pro SP1 ).

Web Catalog Plus seems like another alpha test, not ready for prime time.

Interesting idea, but woefully immature and not well-thought-out or developed yet.

Keep at it, Quang Lam – but if I cannot do n your app what I can do in the web page itself, then you have not invited me in yet.

[@Stephen] Yeah, go ahead and update, ALL versions are registered, I did not need to insert any registration, in fact, there was no place to do so.

It’s up to v25.8.1 at the moment for me, and still dysfunctional – alpha test at best.

I wasn’t sure exactly what yo’d use this for then decided I might create an ‘app’ for Facebook, as Facebook seems to hog memory a bit in my browser.
The app creation process was easy and the actual Facebook ‘app’ was very quick to open and seemed much quicker to scroll etc than in my browser

    BUT

two things stopped me from using it:

    1. the text seemed quite fuzzy and a lot harder to read than the text in my browser
    2. If I clicked on a facebook link in an email then it wouldn’t open it in the app – it would just open in my default browser as per usual. I can’t see a way around this. As one of the main ways I use Facebook is to read the email notifications and click on the links in the ones I’m interested in, then that was a showstopper for me.

    Hi Peter,
This is Quang from WebCatalog. I’m so sorry that the app didn’t work for you. There was a bug that prevented the app from working on Windows 7. It’s now fixed in v25.8.2. Would you mind updating and giving it another go?

Also, WebCatalog does support spell-checking and right-click context-menu. When you click “Try”, WebCatalog only provides you with a minimalist UI to test out the web app/website. The apps that are actually installed would have many more features.

These is also a bug in the licensing system which displays everyone as “Registered”. An update with fix will be available soon.

I think the app looks great but maybe it’s because I haven’t had my morning coffee yet, but I don’t “get it”.

Is this just like making shortcuts to websites?

I installed Udemy to test it out, normally I just have that in my bookmarks toolbar. The one thing I did notice was that my password manager didn’t pick up on the fields so I copy/pasted my username/password.

    1.the idea is interesting
    2. Big drawback – only 64-bit OS is needed
    3. Errors for applications, for example, This site can’t be reached.
    ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID

    Try:
Checking the network cables, modem, and router.
Checking the proxy and the firewall.
    Reconnecting to Wi-Fi.

// This site works in the browser itself //

I see where GMail is available as an app at the WebCatalog site. So how does installing their GMail version as an app on my PC improve my productivity? It seems that I’ll be using more of my client resources rather than their server resources…no?
