There are basically 3 types of Windows software to play the DVD & Blu-Ray movie discs you buy…
    1) use player software from a company that pays licensing fees to the DVD & Blu-Ray folks, e.g. PowerDVD, Nero Platinum etc. Nero Platinum may be the cheapest, on sale frequently this year for ~$35 [or $0 after MIR]. The main disadvantage AFAIK is that when the company stops releasing updates for an old version you can no longer play new discs with newer DRM, so it’s maybe more like a subscription service in practice.

    2) use software like AnyDVD [AnyDVD HD for Blu-Ray] or DVDFab’s Passkey. This software runs in the background, includes drivers, & when running decrypts video DVD & Blu-Ray discs so most any player software can play the disc’s contents. I’m not sure about AnyDVD, but Passkey like DVDFab [& most copiers & rippers] needs to connect to the company’s servers to get info on the DRM for each disc. Disadvantages include yearly or lifetime software licenses [they do have to work with continually evolving methods of DRM after all], and you may still need a player that understands the DVD &/or Blu-Ray format. I say “may” because you can copy the movie to a single file on your hard drive that’s playable with most players, or you can leave it on the disc & use a player that can read & understand the disc’s playlist, so it can play multiple files in order.

    3) use a player like Leawo’s, that combines a DVD/Blu-Ray player with the same sort of decrypter you’ll find in copiers & rippers. These players are usually based on XBMC [], a media center app with TV remote friendly menus & such. Their main disadvantage is that they cannot play the Java driven menus & features on most retail Blu-Ray movie discs, IF that matters to you. These players may or may not show you a list of all the video files on a disc — good if you want to watch any special feature videos [e.g. bloopers], bad in the sense that you have to pick out the movie from a list of videos.

Leawo’s Blu-Ray player is nice. The company’s software tends to include C/C+ runtimes from Microsoft, which is nothing out of the ordinary, but they leave the setup files in the main Root directory or folder [rather than the Temp folder]. That will bother some people [myself included] but won’t cause any problems [it's just not neat & tidy] — note that on this rig it left these files on another partition, not C: . This Blu-Ray player also adds an Appkeys folder to Program Files\ Common Files\ [Program Files (x86) in 64 bit Windows], which holds the files for a Leawo service that’s set to autostart with Windows. I just set it to manual start, but I’ve also run the player without that folder entirely & it seemed to work fine.

The XBMC site has a lot of info & answers that may be useful to you if you have any problems with Leawo’s or any other XBMC-based player.

I downloaded and install the Leawo Blue-ray Player but it prevented the “Metro” Interface on Windows 8.1 from loading applications. Everything seemed okay on the desktop side. Yes I tried restarting, didn’t help. I uninstalled Leawoo Blue-ray Player and everything works okay on the Windows 8.1 desktop and the “Metro” interface. (64 bit with 10GB of memory). Yes my system has ALL updates installed.

Downloaded and registered OK many thanks to Leawo and SOS.
But it still has the same problem (for me) as the last version 1.6 – it won’t play my Blu-Rays……
It recognises the disk OK, but just churns away for a while and does nothing – my CyberLink DVD 14 plays them OK.
It’s really strange as today’s Leawo Blu-Ray Copy reads and copies them fine.
I thought about contacting their ‘support’ – but they only seem to have links for FarceBook and Twotter – I avoid contact with those like the Ebola they are.
    Thanks anyway

[@Rob Kacz] I have exactly the same problem: I was given download links for both Windows and Mac versions, but the email only had a single registration code for the Windows version. The registration server won’t accept that code when I try to register the Mac version, so I’m stuck with a 30-day demo app.

Last time there was a giveaway from Leawo I requested a registration key for PC and received one for a Mac. I contacted Leawo support who then resent the key. Again it was for a Mac and not for a PC. I pointed out the error again and even sent then a copy of the email I received from their tech support showing they has sent the incorrect key. They sent it again–for a Mac. Last time I communicated with them I was told I must be doing something wrong and the problem was on my end of things. My final request for a correct key for PC yielded no reply from them at all. Oh, well, guess I’ll stick with VLC Player for now.

I’m having the same issue with their registration code not working on my Windows 7 machine. I tried 2 separate email addresses, entered the key manually (not copy/paste), and tried both the Mac and Windows codes and it’s still not working. It looks like the Windows code request in my email states it’s for “SOS” (not Windows) and the Mac download says it’s for a Mac. Interestingly enough, both registration codes looks just alike. No differences like most programs do for the two platforms.

Installed fine for me, just make sure there’s not an uninvited space at the end of your serial code as happened to me and seems to happen to me quite regular now that I think about it. Delete the space and hopefully your code goes through ok like mine. I only had one HQ video to try out on it which was Nicki Minaj,, Pound the Alarm. Had to tinker with the sound controls a bit which is half the fun, picture quality was excellent in original size or fullscreen. I didn’t mess with color, brightness or anything except the audio, I changed from my inbuilt realtek speakers to (virtual?) ones the player offers and it sounded as good as you could ever expect on a laptop especially as it was encoded only to two-channel 192kbps AAC. More specs for video for fellow nerds:
    Format : MPEG-4
    Codec ID : mp42
    File size : 179 MiB
    Duration : 4mn 13s
Overall bit rate mode : Variable
    Overall bit rate : 5 940 Kbps
    Width 1 920 pixels
    Height 1 080 pixels
    Display aspect ratio : 16:9

No stutter, played from start to finish without a hitch but was only a 5 minute video so I’ll give it thumbs up for now but reserve final judgement until I’ve watched a full movie, concert or whatever. Thanks for the chance to try it out!

If I run Leawo Blu-Ray Player as administrator, I no longer get the message about my registration number or computer being banned. Instead, when a disc won’t play, a message displays stating that the title is not yet supported. If Leawo Blu-Ray Player needs to run with administrator rights, it should ask for the rights when the program is stated. It would be preferable though if it can be fixed to run without elevated rights.

    Reply to this comment#18OLD COMMENT

As I’ve already mentioned, overall, I really do like Leawo’s Player because of:
    1. The beautiful, simple, uncluttered interface.
    2. The extremely low CPU usage – great for those who want to turn an older computer into an HTPC.
    Here are my test results:
    CPU (% Used)
    GPU (% Used)
    TotalMedia Theater
(Tested on an old PC with a recently added video card: Athlon 64 X2 3800+, 3GB RAM, Win8 64 bit, Geforce GT 630 (Kepler) with 2GB Video RAM.)

Of course, there is some room for improvement to make a good thing even better:

    1. Full Menu is now supported when playing from disc, but it is still not supported when playing from ISO.

    2. Since TotalMedia Theater and PowerDVD cannot play from ISOs, suporting playing from folders would allow users to save their blu-ray movies in a uniform way that can play in all common players. As pointed out in Leawo’s website, one can currently play from a blu-ray folder by choosing a m2ts file. However, it would be much more convenient for the enduser if a movie plays automatically just by navigating to the folder, as is possible in PowerDVD, TotalMedia Theater, DVDFab and PotPlayer. Especially if one has an HTPC and is sitting on the couch, one does not want to figure out which m2ts file to play. In any case, the main movie often consists of more than one m2ts file and sometimes the longest playlist doesn’t even correspond to “Play All”.

    3. There are still some titles that Leawo has trouble with. This is understandable but I if I keep trying to play unsupported titles, I get a message about the software not working on my computer, something about either the registration code or my computer may have been banned. Since I got my code straight from Leawo via the GOTD offer, I know that obviously this is not the case. Everything works again after I restart and reenter the registration. However, this message could be very annoying users who know that they have not done anything illegitimate. When the software is unable to play a title, the error message should be changed and there should not be any implication that the user’s registration number or computer is banned.

    4. It would be a plus if it could support blu-ray 3D in the future.

    5. For HTPCs, it would be great to have Leawo BluRay Player integrate into Windows Media Center (the way PowerDVD does) and/or XBMC.

    6. I had some issue with extreme stuttering with some MKV files, but it may be that it was the files that were defective. To be precise, the files ripped with Aiseesoft MKV Ripper stuttered badly but the ones ripped with MediaCoder played perfectly. I suspect it was the fault of Aiseesoft MKV Ripper because PowerDVD, TotalMedia Theater and DVDFab also had trouble with the same files. However, PotPlayer could play these “bad” MKVs perfectly.

Hello, everyone. When Leawo Blu-Ray Player was featured at GOTD recently, it took 6 full hours for my code to arrive – no kidding!! But it did arrive eventually and I did get to test it out. Overall, I do like Leawo’s Player, enough to purchase the license for lifetime updates.(Hint: The $10 you pay via sharewareonsale is for lifetime updates whereas the current $10 special offer in Leawo’s website only buys you 1 year of updates.)

The main selling points for me are:
    1. The beautiful simple, uncluttered interface.
    2. The extremely low CPU usage – great for those who want to turn an older computer into an HTPC.

I have left the full details of my testing and the pros and cons of this program in the comments section of GOTD, which you can still access. To be precise my comments are numbers 28, 34 and 35 by Gandalf. Number 35 might not even be on yet as I just posted this morning and sometimes it takes the moderators at GOTD a while to look things over.

By the way, I know Leawo Blu-ray Player was promoted on other websites recently. However, our freebie is a LIFETIME license (with no free updates, unless you purchase the free updates upgrade for $9.95) not a one year license ;-)
