@SigridL, no data is ‘gone’ no matter what happens.

I just went through this, replacing a motherboard, and my license for Office 2013 stopped working. It would not authorize online, and said telephone registration was no longer available because the product was too old. I was given 30 days to enter a working 2013 key.

I waited the 30 days to see what would happen. At the end of 30 days, it would no longer load any of its modules, but no data was lost.

Allegedly legit copies of Office 2021 were available for $20-$60 (NO copies or keys for 2013 any more), and it was simpler to just buy the new version instead of fighting with Microsoft.

I bought Office Pro 2021 from Stacksocial (along with some interesting MBA finance courses) for $60, uninstalled 2013, installed 2021 and all my data (documents, spreadsheets, etc.) remained intact.

A pleasant surprise was that Outlook managed to find its data file without any help, something that never happened with previous Office ‘updates’. An unpleasant surprise was it took a tremendous effort to get Outlook to NOT be my email client – it relentlessly tried over and over to get my email server details).

I’m considering updating the rest of my 2013 licenses (which still work) to 2021 for consistency even though 2021 is WILDLY more nosy and intrusive than 2013 was.
