    Houston, we’ve got a problem. When shutting down W7 Ultimate SP1 (32-bit) with 4 Gb. of RAM, I get this:

    “Ant Download Manager v. 1.4.4 Antdm.Exe Application Error
    The Instruction @ 0x00eea790 referenced memory at 0x1f5b7552. The memory could not be read. Click O.K. to terminate the program.
    This program is preventing Windows from shutting down.”

    Please run this by the developer’s for comment. Apart from that, I would be inclined to bump the rating up by a couple stars. But if this is going to remain a recurrent issue without a fix, I may have to uninstall this — reluctantly.

    Please excuse the inadvertent double-post. It did not seem to “take” the first time . . . .

    This is something of an update. It seems that if I close the program first (such that it no longer appears in the Systray), that delay and error message upon closing Windows will not occur. Further, I have used the feature in periodic giveaway Win Utilities Pro that is equivalent to “Startup Cop” to prevent Ant Download Manager from auto-loading after Windows boots. I know this may partly undercut the utility of the download manager, not having it there automatically in the background all the time, but I would much rather summon it on demand anyway. As things stood, it was popping up too often when it was not wanted, clashing with the very good DownThemAll extension I have in Firefox, and sometimes destabilizing the browser. (That extension does not attempt to make any decisions for you. It’s just there, if you choose to use it.) You can direct some of Ant’s behavior, like telling it to ignore certain file types or websites, but for my use this way is much better. The main reason I wanted Ant in the first place was for video capture from websites that typically prevent it. I’ve gone through a number of capture programs like Tubedigger and Jaksta that may work in some cases but not in others. So it was time to see what Ant could do on that score.

    There is a update to v.1.4.5 today and I was wondering if we are allowed to update to this. Usually if a program went to a v.1.5 we won’t be allowed, but is this just an improvement on the existing on? I would like to know. Thank you for your time.

    @Reinhard,

    I don’t know with any certainty, but based on past experience with promos and giveaways like this I would not risk it.

    A further update to my last post: I’ve since found settings in this program that seem to govern its behavior — when and where it steps in to do its thing. With rare exceptions, I much prefer a program NOT to constantly pop up and offer to intervene with something. Ideally, it should appear only when summoned by the user, to perform a specific task. And it should not clash with other installed programs. (This is one advantage you typically get from portable programs.)

    After adjusting several settings, this has become a useful addition to the roster of download options here. (I tossed IDM a while ago, due to some unacceptable behavior . . . .) A few annoyances from Ant remain, however. It seems to ignore the setting to NOT check for updates. My standard assumption is that an update may invalidate your free license, so this is very possibly something to watch out for. Ant also has a mixed record on obeying your Exclusion List. (There seem to be TWO places to enter such exclusions ?) Works for some sites or files, but not for others. This can be intrusive. I have another very good download manager — as a browser extension — which I prefer to use for certain things, and sometimes there is a clash. Ant really should be settable to stay out of your way until you want or need it, but this is not always the case. All of my other download tools are much better behaved, on that score. They don’t “jump in unbidden and hog the stage.” The developers might want to consider that. I also have some specialized tools for locating and grabbing videos that do not particularly want to be found. There have been occasions where I thought I might have to uninstall Ant, as I did with IDM, but that has not happened — so far.
