CoolNewPDF OCR did a better job than Adobe Acrobat 8 at recognizing twin-columns on a book page as FIRST read left column top to bottom, THEN read right column top to bottom – Adobe read across both columns all the way down, resulting in gibberish.

But CoolNewPDF does not seem to be able to save as an OCR PDF itself, as Adobe Acrobat can – Adobe lets you see the original page picture, yet highlight the text in the picture, and get the words underneath to copy and past out, CoolNewPDF does not seem to save an OCR PDF this way ( correct me if I am wrong, CoolNewPDF, please ).

So I had to export/save as DOC, then use free Libre Office to re-save the DOC as Epub, my ultimate goal is to edit and republish using free Calibre, Calibre can convert an Acrobat OCR PDF to Epub, but not a DOC to Epub, hence needing a whole suite of different software to go around many corners to convert, convert, convert.

The CoolNewPDF user interface is so abstruse/obtuse that I do not have confidence that I can reliably use this software to accomplish whatever I want on-demand, but only by accident by exploring and trying a handful of options each time, wasting most of my activities that do not produce the results I am after, but hoping one of my random attempts will do the trick. Which one? I don’t know, I can’t make it happen again.

Note, I optimized the printed-book-scanned-to-image PDF file in Adobe Acrobat BEFORE asking CoolNewPDF to OCR it – Adobe optimization enhanced the contrast between the page background and the text, and clarified text elements.

OCR word-for-word was awful in both programs, but CoolNewPDF recognized columns better than Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro.

I will try Antidote and Grammarly and other programs to continue to ‘fix’ the trashy result – and convert and export documents so the document can be analyzed by other programs, in an effort to correct and figure out what’s NOT OCR-recognized accurately, but I have to work with the original PDF open on one side of my screen, and the OCR result open on the other side of my screen, and slowly scroll line by line and hand-type my corrections … throughout the whole book.

Think about it – even if anyone promised 99% OCR accuracy, that means 1 error per 100 characters, and an average book has ~3,000 characters per page, that’s 30 errors per page, an average book being 325 pages = 325 x 30 = 9,750 errors to fix, and no way is CoolNewPDF even 99% on the kind of book-scanned-PDF I have to deal with, so the reality is much worse.

Who has experience with anything better?

    OmniPage Ultimate?
    Abbyy FineReader?
    Readiris?
Rossum? ( claims only 98% accuracy = ~18,000 errors per book AT LEAST! OUCH! )
    Nanonets?
    SimpleOCR?
    Tesseract?
    Microsoft OneNote?
    Amazon Textract?
    Google Docs?
    … others?

    Any insights?

PS – 6 months, CoolNewPDF is NOT a giveaway, it’s an extended trial, which I’m not even going to pursue the default 7-day trial they have even without the SoftwareOnSale 6-month offer, and even the full-price CoolNewPDF software version expires in 2 years. Why does it expire? Does the programming itself age and go bad? I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 that NEVER expires, at least. Why do companies think finished, and sold software EVER ‘expires’?

Thanks for letting us explore this and share.

I see everyone asking why only 6 months..
here is your answer. it clearly states on the main download page
    Terms and Conditions
This is a 1-computer 6-month license, for commercial or noncommercial use
You get free updates for six months
    No free tech support
You must redeem the license key before this offer has ended
    May not be resold

I didn’t read it until after I had already installed it or I probably wouldn’t have wasted my time but here is the info everyone wondered and that I also wondered until I read the terms and conditions..
