Song Surgeon Trainer is our desktop audio slow downer. It changes key and tempo, allows the creation of one looping area for repetitive playing, and has a 9 band EQ. All of these features can be applied in real time. Song Surgeon Trainer allows musicians to access to the power of slowing down and looping audio as a learning tool. Results from our survey of musicians showed that slowing down a song or music piece as a means of practice increased their learning ability by an average of 614%.
Song Surgeon Trainer comes with a written User Guide and a series of Training Videos, both of which can be accessed through the Help Button of the software. It can open most standard audio file formats, including mp3, mp4, wav, m4a, aac, aif, wma, and cda. This includes opening files on your computer, files from a CD and files saved in your iTunes folder.

Reviews for Song Surgeon Trainer
I think other reviewers have some good points about usability issues. It’s not that bad, but could be much better. I’d like to see a list of favorites that’s easy to change.
I see this as very helpful tool to let me slow down a song so I can learn to play it on guitar or other instruments. It can do that without changing the pitch, and it sounds very good down to about 70% of the original speed (that’s much better than many programs similar to this one). If I’m going to perform a song well with others, I may want to practice it at a faster tempo so it seems easier at showtime. This program lets you do that as well. Clicking the arrows lets you speed up or slow down by 1% increments.
The program also lets you change the pitch, or key of the song. Great for vocalists who sing in a different range, or for learning a song in a different key. Clicking the pitch arrows moves up and down 1 half-step (that’s one guitar fret, or one piano key). A very nice use of this feature is to change a song’s pitch by a SMALL amount, so you can play along without retuning your instrument to match the recording. Sadly, the arrow keys do NOT change tuning by a cent (1 hundredth of a half step) as the label in the program says, but instead they shift it a half step. The big slider bar can shift by smaller amounts, but it’s almost impossible to control it accurately. Trying to move it a small amount, I changed pitch by 0.67 half steps (if I’m reading it all correctly). So there’s no way to match a song to your instrument’s tuning.
Will I use it? Maybe. The lack of fine-tuning the pitch is almost a deal breaker. Sound quality for tempo changes makes up for it. Recommendation: if you need to practice along with a song to learn rhythm or notes or lyrics, TRY IT!
It is an amazing feeling when you listen to music that you love. However, it is even better when you can sing along especially if you know all the lyrics. Apart from listening to a song over to learn its lyrics, you can now access help in the name of a software package called Song Surgeon Trainer. This software thrives in helping you learn songs by slowing them down by Tempo and Key. After using the program, here is my experience.
At a Glance
Although only in its first official version, the software supports Windows XP up to Windows 10. In terms of installing it, you will have an easy time following along its installation wizard. On running the program, the interface that greats you is rather practical with popping options. The options are self-explanatory but you can also hover above them to find out more.
Pros
Easy to Use Options
Whether the software finally achieves its goal or not, the one thing that was clear to me right of the bat was its ease of use. To get started, you only need to take advantage of the OPEN option to add new audio or video files to the playing area. The process only requires few steps and you can further make it easy by selecting a dedicated folder from the OPTIONS button.
Has a Functional Loop Editor
If you want to go a step further by utilizing the features that Song Surgeon Trainer presents, you should click on the Loop Editor button next to the Equalizer button. This option makes it possible to loop a section of music to allow you time listen to the words and learn. Using the Loop Editor is also easy.
Cons
No Option to Add a Playlist
I had no problem with Song Surgeon Trainer in the way it intended to achieve its goal. However, the lack of the ability to add a playlist to its playing area was one of the things that threw me off. With the absence of such an option, I had to manually add single files, which was an unpleasant experience.
Always Resets to Default Tempo and Key
As if the manual addition of files to the playing area was not enough, it did not take me long to note that Song Surgeon Trainer always reset to the default Tempo and Key every time I added another file. This was another unpleasant thing about the program and at that point, it was clear it lacked the user experience I expected.
Less Intuitive File Browser
To add a new file into the playing area, you need to click on the OPEN button. In doing so, I did not find Song Surgeon Trainer’s file browser to be intuitive. I found the window that pops up a little bit utilitarian.
Verdict
Instead of looking for the advanced music software that disk jockeys and music producers use in music production, you can find a simple and practical alternative in Song Surgeon Trainer. This software package actually works as intended by giving you options to play around with the Tempo and Key of music files. However, it scores poorly on other aspects that could have made it more helpful.
Song Surgeon Trainer is like a mini version of virtual DJ. It’s mission is simple, make the party fine without forcing you to hire a professional DJ or rely on downloaded DJ mixes. This, at a glance, seems more than enough to keep even the basic of the parties, karaoke or personal listening at its best. But there is more to it than meets the eye.
Launching it for the first time gave me the illusion of dealing with a scaled up media player that is too limited to be a virtual DJ platform or any audio playback enhancement platform. This left me confused as I really didn’t know what I was dealing. Trying out its capabilities as a pure audio player gave me some bit of satisfaction, making me rethink my expectations.
It Actually Does Alter Music Pitch
This is the basic function of Song Surgeon Trainer. Two big sliders you can’t miss sit to the extreme right and this will let you increase or decrease song tempo or key. The two are really fun to play with and could come in handy when trying to catch the lyrics to a song or just alter the playback for fun. The simplicity and ease of application makes it a perfect and easy to access tool to anyone.
The Loop Editor is Sort of Practical
A nondescript icon next to the well-known graphic equalizer icon draws out the loop editor that is quite handy in creating and implementing loop points bearing in mind that you can see the audio’s waveforms and choose the perfect stop and start points with ultra-high precisions.
Practical Keyboard Shortcuts
With the Song Surgeon Trainer’s catalog being so short, you’ll find the dedicated shortcut keys that do virtually everything you could do with the keyboard more welcome and convenient. Word of advice, be patient when using them. The app tends to glitch out when you use two shortcuts in quick succession without letting one propagate.
Cons
Can’t Mix Tempo, Key and Loop Editor into a Single Automated Setting
It is such a pity that you cannot incorporate the tempo, key or equalizer settings to different segments in the song using the loop editor and you will have to manually change them every time you loop. It is also disappointing that I cannot set multiple loop points and dictate how many times the Song Surgeon Trainer will have to loop a section before moving on to the other.
Verdict
Song Surgeon Trainer seems like a great tool if you looking for controlled pitch and tempo during your playbacks and easy to click loops. The equalizer is precise and quite handy in fine tuning your changes. I however found this application to be more or less of a scaled down audio player with most of the other basic playlist or library management features stripped out.
