Reviews for TunesKit Audiobook Converter
My first objection to this software is that (in and of itself) it is incomplete – it HAS to have iTunes installed alongside it before it can work at all (and yes, TunesKit do tell you that if you look at the software on their website!). Other than in the Reviews, that fact is sadly not mentioned on this site.
However, unaware of this at the time, I downloaded the program since it appeared to do just what I needed, i.e. to allow me to play my perfectly legal Audiobooks on my little MP3 player.
Installing the Converter program tells you that “iTunes is not installed” but rather foolishly doesn’t prompt you to go download that program in order to make the Converter able to perform. However it registered OK with the data provided.
Not being a fan of Apple and their iTunes (at all, since their miniscule payments to artists for using their work is a real scandal!) I fought against my natural feelings … eventually installing the current 64-bit version of iTunes [12.5.1]. Re-installing TunesKit’s Converter after that at least prevented me being notified of that installation issue!
Once the Converter program was registered with the appropriate data, dragging an Audible .aax file into the “Add Files” window at least allowed me to see that the converter should be able to Convert that file to a .WAV, but after 2 hours (of conversion time) the ‘bar’ (which I assume is supposed to indicate the progress of any conversion) is still blank, and there’s no file in the designated output folder! At this point I gave up, and it has all been Uninstalled from my PC.
I even followed TunesKit’s tutorial – where they helpfully show the conversion of a video file on a Mac, rather than an audiobook on a PC.
So I must agree with Bruce Fraser’s earlier conclusions, in that this program isn’t really showing that it can do any sort of a job in making Audiobooks audible! Of course, YMMV!
One other observation – when asking if you want to “Cancel” an operation – giving you the options of ‘OK’ or ‘Cancel’ really isn’t “logical”! [Are you going to Cancel the ‘Cancel’ or ‘OK’-ing the ‘Cancel’???]
From what looked as if it had great potential, I’m afraid it’s a real stinker!! My advice would be to Avoid it!!
The need to convert Audiobooks to other formats always arises from time to time. In order to complete the process, you can access a bunch of programs. But it is the advantages that one converter offers that can set it apart. While searching for a converter, I came across TunesKit Audiobook Converter and decided to give it a try. Here is my experience in using the program.
At a Glance
I was through with the installation process within minutes. The main window with the program’s interface is an absolute breeze. You can get started right away with your conversion process since it is very easy to know what each option refers to. However, TunesKit Audiobook Converter shows high dependency on iTunes hence you might have to install it first.
Pros
Clean Interface
After installing and running TunesKit Audiobook Converter, it will present you with a clean interface with few important options for you to use. The prominent buttons are the Add Files for adding files from your iTunes library, Converted to check the files you have converted, and Convert for actually performing the main function of the program.
The buttons are also widely spread to avoid any cluster that would dent the appearance of the interface. At the middle of the window is a large space meant for dragging and dropping the files you want to convert.
Supports Up To Six Output Audio Formats
In a couple of clicks and steps, you will be ready to start converting your Audiobooks into your preferred audio formats. However, the output format depends on what you select under the Preferences menu. While choosing the output format, you will have up to six options, which are MP3, M4A, M4B, AAC, WAV, and FLAC.
Fast Conversion
After everything was set, I was impressed by the short time the program took to convert single or batch files. As such, I did not have to wait hours to end to be through with the process. I also noted noted that the program manages to preserve the quality and tags of the original Audiobooks.
Cons
Non-functional Drag and Drop
After you install and run TunesKit Audiobook Converter, one of the first things you will notice is the wide white space at the middle of the interface. The space is supposed to let you drag and drop Audiobooks onto it. However, that option did not seem to work for me and I felt totally cheated.
Dependency on iTunes
When I turned to the other option of adding files to this converter, I faced another challenge. On clicking the Add Files option at the top bar of the program, it automatically tries to access your iTunes Library. As such, I had to had to undergo the rather unpleasant process of installing iTunes. Mark you, I am not an iTunes person, I use Spotify. If you do not have iTunes installed, then this program will add no value to you as far Audiobook conversions are concerned.
Supports Only Four Languages
If you do not use English, German, French or Chinese, then you will have a hard time navigating this program. That will be the case since the four languages are what the program only supports.
Verdict
If you have iTunes installed and looking for an Audiobook converter, then TunesKit Audiobook Converter would be a fair consideration. Otherwise, downloading and installing this program will add little value to you.
Worked great for me – except one thing: after converting, the files all have the wrong duration time. That happens in conversions to MP3, WAV, FLAC – only m4a worked properly. So I removed one star for that. Other than that it’s awesome!
I’m sure this is a fine product. But it’s a fail for me.
When I click the “Add files” button, it opens a window called “iTunes Library.” There is no way to browse anywhere on the computer; it reads only what is in one’s iTunes folder. I don’t have iTunes, so that’s pretty useless.
Back to the main program. The section where files are located (or would be located if any were found) says “Drag Audiobook files into this area.” I have a 1 GB AAX file from Audible.com, and the drag appears to go well: the mouse icon turns into a “+” as I drag and drop it into that box. But nothing happens. The file never appears.
Program’s converting ability: presumably good.
Program’s user interface: FAIL.
