When setup is run in Protected Folder it asks for the old password. It says the hint is: ss19
It appears to be asking for a password that I did not create and have no idea what it is.

[@Ashraf] Since I have no previous account with this producer to have a password with them and since some softwares require a key to be put in BEFORE the installation starts, I thought this was one of them, just the wrong choice of words. Anyhow, after reading the comments, I have decided not to install it anyhow. I already have Wise Folder Hiding SW. Thanks, TC.[@Ashraf]

[@sky1] Why are you entering the license key as the password? Enter your password in the password field, you will enter your license key after you get past the password screen.

When I put in the registration key given in the readme file, it says Wrong Old Password and will NOT install the software! Why? Where is the new key? I downloaded the zip file also from the Giveaway page and it is the same key and the same result.

Too many fuller featurerd, freeware alternatives for this type of software reviewed and discussed at dotTech.org to make this 6-month version advisable . . . .

[@Philx] As I’ve said in other conversations I’ve had on SoS with SoS’ers, it is necessary for some programs to work on the subscription model, simply because there are reoccurring costs the developer must pay (e.g. maintaining a database). I agree with you that Protected Folders is NOT one of those programs — there is no need, in my mind, for Protected Folders to be on a subscription basis; it should be one of those buy once, use forever type programs. However, to be fair to IObit, they offer free versions of many of their programs and have been doing so since they started… so go easy on them.

That said, the regular price of Protected folders is $19.95 per year and this freebie is for 6-months license, which is why I listed the value of this freebie at $9.98 :-)

‘Protected Folder’ is Iobit pushing its luck to the fullest and arguably, is Iobit at its most cynical. ‘Protected Folder’ hides nothing at all if you boot up in Safe Mode; the software is deliberately time-crippled so as to gouge the user with a renewal fee every 12 months; uninstallation by novice users is only possible if they’ve remembered their password. . .

What’s especially absurd about ‘Protected Folder’ is that Wise software, which has moved in on just about every area Iobit once used to dominate, publishes “Wise Folder Hider” — software which does *exactly* the same job as ‘Protected Folder’ — 100% free of charge for life: no marketing tricks, no obnoxious recurring fees.

Iobit’s website touts ‘Protected Folder’ at $39 95 for just one year’s usage, with a special offer currently running at $19.95. Now it’s here with a so-called $9.98 freebie. Kudos to Ashraf for making the license terms crystal clear so that no SoS visitor is under any illusions as to what’s actually being offered here — but none at all to the once mighty Iobit. Does it really think every computer user is stupid???
