However, I am writing here again tonight, also because I want to set the record straight, in all fairness to the company. They finally wrote to me a few hours ago, apologizing for troubles they have caused me (apparently due to server overload) and told me where I can download the software (still need to login), giving me also a license key specific to my name/account. Well, it was a very polite email, so I feel a bit sorry for the strong comments I have made but hey, it was 6am, I only had a few hours left to sleep and I was trying to get the damn thing before the offer expired in 2 hours time. So, robbing me one hour of those 3-4 hours, without result, was truly aggrevating. If you have questions, ask them directly. Maybe not the web masters nor even the programmers, but the customer care lady is nice. :)

Giovanni, welcome but as it turned out, my “educated” guess was mostly wrong. ArtKns has kindly explored the matter thoroughly and took it upon himself to explain it all to us in detail, which is highly appreciated. Not that I want to do anything anymore with this software OR the company, despite having an old internal HDD from my old XP laptop which could be transferred to my new W7 system. The negative issues in his and peterd’s comments, although contradicting eachother a bit, made me glad I already decided not to bother anymore.

I recently purchased the Pro (or is it ‘Ultimate’) version of PCMover for $50 US. It did what it promised, moving almost everything from a Windows 7 laptop to a new Windows 8.1 laptop***. I was impressed with the job it did.

That said it also tried to install Toolbar add-ons and junk software at the install on each system, and when it had done the transfer. I had to constantly decline and un-check boxes to stop this crap installing. Even for free or trial product, it was too much. For a paid product, it was unacceptable. If anything else can do the same or close to the same, I want to know because I use this product reluctantly. I give it 9/10 for doing a great job, but I’ll reduce that to 3/10 for trying to install so much crap and the unwanted advertising that comes with the PAID version. It gets a thumbs up for the job, and a double thumbs down for the crap.

** Windows 8.1 WET (Windows Easy Transfer) doesn’t support Windows 7 as the ‘old’ computer. Windows 8.0 WET does so always transfer using WET before you upgrade to 8.1.

OK, Sorry for the long post but a lot to cover: I just got off a long chat session with Laplink and have some good and, mostly, bad news.

The good news is that is you have REGISTERED the give-away but NOT INSTALLED it there is no expiration on installing and using it on some future date. [But by then, you will probably have forgotten about it. ;-)]

Chat: “once you get the product in your account, it doesnt expire.”

Registration appears to consist of creating the Laplink account and following the three steps on the promo page.

However, if you have INSTALLED it to check it out (as most people would do with new software), you are SOL and might as well delete it right now rather than be surprised and frustrated when you need it.

As the promotion page ambiguously states, the product code can only be used one time. Installing PCMover uses up that one time!

PCM is basically a “pull” app. It is designed to be installed on a “new,” receiving system and it will “pull” (retrieve, extract), various settings and files from the “old” source (physical disk and/or disk image). If you installed it on your current system, as far as PCM is concerned, that now is your “new” system. So unless you have an old system disk laying around with something on it that you want to retrieve you now have a worthless piece of SW taking up space.

Once installed and activated on the target system, there is no limit on how many time you can run it. Since I haven’t installed it I don’t know if one can select what is transferred. If so, that would be one reason for multiple executions. Also, nothing was said about multiple “old system” sources so there seems to be no limitation there.

Getting Laplink support to define “new system” was like pulling teeth but basically anything other than the OS in which PCM is installed is a “new system”. This probably means that if you wipe and reinstall an OS on the same box, that is a “new” system. Same restriction on paid version as giveaway version. $40 for a one-shot transfer!

Chat: “as long as you arent changing the OS, its the same PC. the paid and free version have the same restrictions except you can only acquire ONE of the free ones.”

IOW, if you change the OS, it is a new PC and the freebie no longer works. The freebie you can get only once but we’ll take your $40 as many times as you are willing (and foolish enough), to pay us.

And it gets worse. Even if you pass through all the hoops and have it installed on your new system/box, what you may actually be able to extract and use may be far less than what you expected.

It will transfer your user profile, user profile documents and application program and data files. However, except for a very few common apps (such as Adobe or MS Office), it will NOT transfer the registry keys necessary to re-register/activate any app on the new system. You will still need to re-install from scratch almost every single app you want to transfer. And since, over the years, most apps collect a lot of garbage anyway, it is probably best to start over. All in all, not much different than a good file manager would do.

So, essence, why bother? I, and probably a lot of you, have wasted way too much time on this giveaway. You would do better with the Aomei giveaway elsewhere on this site and use it instead.

I seldom leave negative feedback, but this one’s a real loser. There seems to be a lack of clarity at every turn, which is one of the fundamental attributes I’d be looking for in a program for the stated purpose of this one. Unh-uh.

Thanks mate for your comment. Hope you are right about my question.

In my view, what makes this software so GOOD is its ability to restore an old image on a new PC without touching the OS running in new PC (including Windows 8)!

However, if what you need is just to move applications, documents etc…from one PC to another, you can do that for FREE with no hassle….were you aware of that, folks?

Further to my message to them complaining about their non-functional registration system (see below), those idiots sent me a “no-reply” standard email just giving me a link to their login page, with no word about why their system does not work or how to make it work (let alone a registration key, since they already have all my data in my account). Proving that their support system/people suck, too. Do not bother with this software, it is not worth it, I am sure it wont work as promised either.

    Reply to this comment#52

[@Giovanni] Giovanni, I wouldn’t be surprised if the sick people behind this company intended you to buy another license by giving away (?) one copy, but my logic tells me that instead of “one PC”, what they really mean is “one operation/migration”. Thus, when you install this in one PC and then decide to move the image of that PC onto another PC, the license, together with the software “moves along” to the new PC, which does not need to have the software to be installed there beforehand, as it is coming with the image (thus leaving the old PC, and hence no longer being on THAT PC, which complies with their requirements). Therefore, you will need ONE license for EVERY PC you want to eventually move, ie. for every instance of a migration operation, not for every PC involved in the act. Of course, it would be too much to ask for a CLEAR explanation from these idiots who can come up with such a registration torture. Do not take my word for it, and I will never deal with these people again but this is my educated guess.

  11. Giovanni

    Reply to this comment#51

So, if I got it right, we need at least 2 licenses of this program, because this product must be installed at least in 2 PCs but each license works on 1 PC only…..is that right?

What if we created two different accounts there? Can this trick work or each key license must match the same email address?

That’s crucial because if this trick doesn’t work, my understanding is that we need to BUY at least 1 license to make a full data migration from one PC to another one….. get the drift?

From SharewareonSale I got info and directions but the hurdles you put people through just to give a lousy freebie (no idea yet if it is a good or lousy product actually as I will never try it out now), is incredible, unethical, idiotic and sadistic all at the same time. You have made me waste 1 hour of my sleep time trying to figure out why your silly system keeps giving error/wrong code messages, denying me the download link, etc., while I KNOW I am not doing anything wrong. If this is a lousy marketing gimmick or even a lame attempt to get more email addresses to spam later, then shame on you. Just 2 hours left-Downloaded Finally. Thanks. I also downloaded the user manual which on page 3 states:
    “Image Restore Information:
    • Restore Steps: To restore from an image or old hard drive, first mount the image or connect the hard drive to your new PC:
    • VHD image format: If you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8 on your new PC and the disk image is in VHD
(i.e., virtual hard disk) format, you can mount the image using the Disk Management tool included in Windows 7 and Windows 8.
    • Other image formats: If the image is not in VHD, mount the disk image as a drive using your disk imaging soft ware (i.e., Laplink DiskImage). (Can also mount a drive using later versions of Acronis and also Easeus Todo 5 & 6) You will have to install either on your new PC and mount the image of that old PC)
    • Hard drive: Physically connect your old hard drive directly to your new PC
See the Setting Up Image Restore section (page 3) for more information on these
    three options.
After the image is mounted as a drive or the hard drive is connected, start
PCmover Image & Drive Assistant on your new PC. Complete the PCmover
screens as directed in the Setting Up Image Restore section (see page 3) and
restore your selected programs, files and settings to your PC..
It will take a couple of hours to transfer and there are allot of other things that need to be done. Read the User manual twice to be sure you understand it. I hope this helps to resolve some of the confusion.

[@Sunnaze] My first reaction to this software was the same as yours. Then I went to the Laplink website to get more details. PCmover is not the usual hard drive imaging program that restores an image of your existing hard drive [with existing OS, programs and files] to the same or different computer hardware setup. Instead PCmover will allow you to transfer your existing programs and data files to a different Windows Operating System without having to re-install them on the new Operating System. Example: XP to Win 7 or to Win 8. Program appears to find the updated drives and program files necessary to run on the new operating system so that they run properly. I haven’t used this software but could see advantage of not having to re-install my current software. You could probably accomplish similar results by installing the MS upgrade version of Win 8 if upgrading your existing computer from Win 7 or Vista but it will cost more than $40.00. If you don’t plan to buy a new computer Win 8 already installed then you probably don’t need this software.

The whole situation seems very confused. First of all, it would be a good idea for Laplink to state clearly which of three versions they are offering us because if it is only the home version then, as far as I can tell from the features of the three versions at the Laplink site, it doesn’t do what the description at Shareware on Sale says it does.
Secondly, i haven’t installed it yet but either Laplink or Shareware on Sale need to provide some clear instructions on how to use this software

So basically, this software is on a par with disposable nappies/diapers… a single-use solution. $40 a pop is quite expensive for a single use! It’s seems to be nothing more than a billable service really.

My reading suggests this needs to be installed in the PC that you wish to transfer your programs into, Say you have your 2010 PC, and it dies. So you wish to transfer some programs into the 2014 PC that you will purchase tomorrow.
For this program to do it’s work, it needs to be installed tomorrow into the the new PC you have not purchased yet. (You then connect the old drive, and run the program in the new PC).
What I am perplexed about, is how can we use this free offering ?
Because it will have to be activated at that time.

    From PC Pro:
PCmover Professional is a migration tool with an unusual ability: it can transfer not only documents and settings but entire working applications from an older PC onto a new system. It works with almost all versions of Windows (though downgrading isn’t officially supported), and can even perform “in-place” migrations – handy for moving a single computer between OS editions that can’t be directly upgraded.

Please note though, this software will only work once.
“The serial number you purchase is good for one time only and must be validated over the Internet or phone. If you want to use the program again, you’ll have to buy another serial number.”
