Thanks GiMeSpace for responding to my question, however, you did not answer the question I asked (asking why is there a request to add a Firewall exception). Instead, you explained that the process works when verifying the key. I have no doubt that the verification step would work, but the question I still have is “Why is it necessary to add a Firewall exception when other programs do not require it?” I do not want to add a Firewall exception for 7 days, one day, one hour, or 5 seconds even.

When I am asked to add a Firewall exception, I have no idea what else is taking place. Regardless of any assurances given, my suspicion rises to the level that I am likely to decide the program simply is not worth it. Any time you scare a potential customer away, you are doing yourself a disservice. It is always better to not require anything suspicious. Others do it, and so can you. Please find another way to activate your products.

Again thanks for your replay, but I do hope you will consider an alternative method of activation.

[@Gary] There are programs that allow to check what is being send over internet. If you like you can check, the key is send to my server where it is validated and then a confirmation code is send back. That is all. If you don’t trust this then that is your choice. The program has zero detections on virustotal.com so you can be sure there is no bad things happening. For copy protection online activation is needed and the setup program offers you to add the exception so you will be able to activate it without the firewall blocking it. You can also add it manually later if you decide to activate it after the trial period finished. Some people will use another firewall program and need to add their own exception.

Thanks again for the reply. I have several programs to check what is being sent over the Internet and see exactly what a program is doing, but I did not want to bring them up because, quite frankly, I don’t want to bother with them just to activate a program, especially in lieu of the fact that other programs are able to activate without having to create a Firewall exception.

I know that you have been in business for several years. Some of the companies I have consulted for have your software, and it all worked fine. Also, I do believe you when you explain that the key is sent and a confirmation code is sent back. You and I both know that is all that is needed, and there is no great value in doing anything deceptive because it would get discovered and discussed on the web. Obviously, you would not want to tarnish your good reputation by doing something that shows more was being transferred than just the key/confirmation key exchange. But the point is not to convince me. There are other potential users that will be scared away because you chose to request an exception. You can tell all of them “If you don’t trust this then that is your choice” but that is bad business.

    >”The program has zero detections on virustotal.com so you can be sure there is no bad things happening.”
Virustotal.com knows about viruses and the heuristics of what most “in the wild” viruses look like, but Virustotal.com does not know what else a program does as part of its job. Therefore, there are several ways a program could be written that passes all of the virustotal.com checks, but later on starts collecting data of any type it has access to, even personal data. There have been several examples of how to get that data back to the developer.

Tests have been shown that users are typically gullible, even seasoned users. For example, a program was developed that for most of the time, the program acts as expected performing some other useful task. In addition to its regular task, it could collect personal data as well, unbeknownst to the user. Then at some point, a fake crash happens. The user is prompted to see if they are willing to send the encrypted data to the developer so that the problem can be fixed. The majority of users chose to send the data to the developer. The program passed virustotal.com and any other antivirus software checks without issue. Imagine how much easier it would be if there was an exception in the Firewall that the user forgot to remove, or just hadn’t gotten around to it yet.

A program that passes virustotal.com is only to show it does not harbor a known virus. Informing users that the program is safe because it passes virustotal.com will be acceptable for most users, but not for all.

Thanks again. I know you will take a second look at how you activate the programs you sell.

[@Gary] Well, the way my programs are activated hasn’t changed for years, the fact is that on most standard windows installations the activation even works without a firewall exception, but I noticed lately that more users had firewall configurations that were blocking so this option is only a service to the users to easily solve this. But you are right, maybe I should give more information about why and when it is needed. thanks for the feedback.
