Did trhe Buy Pro click…no option presented to enter registration…if there are clicks and tricks SOS should know them in the first place and place the instructions on the site or with the download…this has been the ssame for almost all of the downloads I have attempted in the past 2 months…seems only those that are not pre-registered cause issues.

[@Doc] Really?!?!?!?! So, you just cicked on the “Get Pro” and a registration option became present? That’s not what happened with me…my click took me to their web site where I was given one of three options to select – when I clicked on the “Pro” option, it took me to a shopping cart where I could purchase a license for a year…no “freebe” option ever offered or extended…but it did givew me the option to put in my credit card info and to get billed on a yearly basis. P.S. – the same was true for the 1 – PC option or the 3- PC option…I do not see a “Pro” freebe here, and I do not see anyplace to enter a registration…so…you tell me?

Sorry for the dual reply…clicked the wrong button to reply to myself…guess Driver Pro is not the only one capable of mis-stepping.

I just ran the “Free” version of Driver Pro…it will scan and that is practically it for the services it provides. Try the customer support button and it announces that the user has to purchase the pro version…did the scan…had several drivers that were out of date…looked for an option to download and install, as if I would expect such a feature on a “free” version, and there is none…in fact, if you want to download a driver, that’s right, “A DRIVER,” singular, you have to write down all the details and then search for a download on the web…personally, a software utility that is limited, I am not about to trust or waste my time downloading and attempting to install a driver based on the information it displays…and “cut&paste” is not an option…I tried that…tried the backup drivers option…told me all of my drivers were not backed up…went to back them up and it was like a loud horn blasting and a voice proclaiming, “You lose!” – i.e., nothing…so, I thought, let me look at hardware info…clicked on it and it presented information that was not my system…I have 24 GBs of high speed RAM on my system…from 2 different mfg…different sizes, same speed, in four slots…It reported one 8 GB piece of RAM and then got the MFG wrong…

With this much “wrong” about this “free” offer, it is safe to cuddle the opinion that this software and working fully as a freebie do not collide in the same sentence. Huge, NO WAY”!

Looks like I have a lot to say about this questionable software…just went to do an uninstall on this software and when it completed and proclaimed it had completely uninstalled itself, then closed…my watchful app noticed that it was a filthy uninstall…traces were left behind in the registry, which I then removed…the only thing “techie” about this buggie software is in its name. The U.I. looks like it was created by a third grader using Visual FoxPro or VBA, it does not function beyond telling you your drivers are not up-to-date, (as if you did not already know it from the fact that you showed any interest in it at all…superfluous info)… unless you shell out dough, and if you don’t fill up its tank with your credit card at the end of a year’s period, it stops…just like a car on an empty gas tank. Truthfully, it would have been nice to use it for a limited time, even a year, if it could actually be made to actually function…as a freebie.

It looks like you had a problem with the Driver Techie program, and you are giving a bad rap in the comments. I was curious to see if my experience would match yours but it did not. I followed the instructions given on the SoS download page, and after activating the software, it worked as expected.

I use screen captures for every step of an install, and for some, I use screen recording software to document exactly what happens in an install. That way, I can display to a tech support rep what I experienced. It also helps me if I want to return to see each step. If you are not doing the same, then you should adopt this practice to get proper help.

To communicate more clearly, I use the term “version” to refer to a number (1.0.1.1) and “edition” (Std vs. Pro) to refer to different variants of the same version number. The SoS website offered us the Pro edition of Driver Techie version number 1.0.1.1. OK, now we have that out of the way, back to your comments.

It looks like the major problem you had was activating the software.

The comment by Bill is correct. His suggestion to click on “Get Pro” is the same as was provided to you on the final page where you get the license key to use. The line following the license key states: “Note: Make sure to read the directions below to learn how to use this!” That is about as simple as it gets … provided you do read the section that explains how to use the license key.

That section explains what was provided (e.g., program, key), and informs you to download and install the software. The next statement essentially states the same thing as Bill did:
“Then, run it and register it with your license key. You can register by going to GET PRO from within the main program window.”

When you click on the Get Pro orange button, in the display area to the right, a field is displayed to enter the license key, then click on Activate next to that field.

That’s it. If you don’t do those things, you cannot expect the program to become activated on its own or do what it claims. The “unactivated” state is what I expect the “Free” edition of the software to do. So, make sure you activate the software before claiming the software does not do what it claims. The edition of the same version of the program has no reason to work differently for different people.

    >”if there are clicks and tricks SOS should know them in the first place and place the instructions on the site or with the download.”
And that is exactly what they did. The instructions are there and they are clear about what to do.

You explained that the website opened up when you clicked on “Get Pro.” I tried installing on a Win 7 and Win 10, and for both, when I click on Get Pro, I am not taken to the website. Instead, I get the prompt to fill in the license key. After clicking on Activate, a small pop-up dialog reports that the software was activated successfully.

After successful activation, the Get Pro button is still displayed, but if you exit and restart the program, the Get Pro on the orange button will be gone.

If you do not restart the program, you will be reminded. I noticed for other choices I clicked on after activation, a tiny dialog (white on orange) states “Change(s) saved. Restart Driver Techie for the changes to take place.” Once restarted, everything works as expected.

This program can be installed and activated totally without going to the website. Of course, if you reach the website and try to Get Pro from there, then sure, they presume you wish to purchase the software program. Again, you do not need the Driver Techie website to install and activate the PRO edition.

It looks like you tried the free edition or the SoS installed software without activating it. Anything you encounter there has nothing to do with the experience of using the licensed PRO edition, so there is no need to mention those experiences. The PRO edition of the software works on its own without requiring the user to do anything other than select drivers to update and click on “update” to do the actual update.

You mentioned that the software did not uninstall everything. That is not uncommon at all for a lot of programs. If a trial program were to totally uninstall everything that it installed, users would do the uninstall, then reinstall for another trial period without ever paying for the software. Naturally, programs leave some things behind to look for during the next install. Even using an uninstall monitor program is not a perfect solution. There are lots of programs that have hidden bits of information in the registry that is not changed during an uninstall, nor are they removed by an uninstall monitor program. In many cases, the Registry entries are required for Windows itself to run, so they cannot be removed, nor does the uninstall monitor program know what to do to change things back. Developers have become very clever; they know how to modify things that will allow them to check on next time, but their changes not prevent Windows from running.

If you have your original SoS download file, try installing again and stay away from the website. Sometimes, SoS will not allow a user to download the same program a second time (in order to give others a chance). You can also use the program downloaded from the Driver Techie website. It is the same file as evidenced by having the same HASH values. If you get it from the Driver Techie website, close your browser during the install because you shouldn’t need it. If the browser does open up, close it and return to the actual installed program. That is where the activation must take place.

After successfully activating the software, you should click the “lowercase italic i” at the bottom. It will show the edition of the software (PRO), the version of the software (1.0.1.1), and the number of days remaining, This program should start out with 180 days remaining after installation.

Also, use the gear icon to select options. At the top of that window is three choices (General, Backup & Restore, and System Restore). The Backup & Restore allows the user to enter a folder to keep the driver backups; it is already prefilled, but you can change it to a different location if you wish.

The most important tab is the System Restore tab, It has the option to set a Restore Point before updating drivers.

Once you are through with the gear icon options, it is time to do your first driver scan. After the Scan is complete, you should have a list of drivers that can be updated, followed by drivers that are up-to-date.

Before doing any update, notice that this view has two tabs at the top. The default is Driver Update. the second tab is Driver Backup. You should always ensure the backed-up driver database is the same as what you currently have installed. Do the Backup first. When it is complete, you can return to the first tab (Driver Update).

On the Driver Update tab, you can choose any drivers to update, then click its Update button. The program will automatically update the driver.

Drivers are usually developed by an original provider, but that driver may be tweaked by a reseller to work better with their hardware, Since drivers can be modified for a specific device, motherboard, etc., the Driver Techie updated driver may be better or worse than what you had. Sometimes, the original developer will incorporate others improvements, so sometimes, an update from the original developer will be better.

Myself, I never do driver updates without a system image I can return to in the event of problems caused by a driver update program.

That is about it. You already mentioned the Hardware Info menu option. The program displayed accurate information for my systems.

I have no association with the developer. My purpose is to show that they do not deserve a bad rap based on one person’s experience.

This software is a little bit too eager to install drivers, other more trusted updaters pass over.
I checked drivers with Ccleaner Professional and found a couple of drivers to update, then restarted no problems.
Next ran Techie Pro which found a lot more out of date drivers so I updated those and restarted to a bluescreen.
Ended up having to restore to a backup.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A RESTORE PLAN IF YOU ARE GOING TO CLICK UPDATE DRIVERS ON TECHIE PRO (As you should on any anyway)

[@Gary] …just so I understand…if I have a bad experience with a software freebie, such as I had here…and P.S. I followed directions…I’m not supposed to record that here? …especially with a utility program that can, and many often do, crash a system???????

A first version software (v1), from a company who’s website was only established in 2022 (therefore, in the last 2.5 months) and contains absolutly zero information about the company (country, address, phone, e-mail, etc.) and yet, I am expected to install their software on my PC and allow them to make changes to my drivers? NO WAY!

While I appreciate this SOS site along with the generous companies offering us their software without charge and I try to support any new business just starting out, this is just to iffy for me to feel comfortable taking a chance on.

    Thanks anyway.

Is this application more reliable than the widespread Driver Booster,
which is why I reinstalled the operating system on my computer last month!
