Who still uses a “classic” serial port?
USB-COM converters are not a good idea!
Because current motherboards don’t really support them anymore!
Luckily, I still have a motherboard that I only need to buy a connector for if I want to program via I2C2 protocol again (I used it like that last time with a couple of component converters that I made for it)
Of course, I was thinking of the I2C protocol, which I think is already used by more people than the native COM protocol.
Sadly this is not like a TCP/UDP packet sniffer as serial ports can only be accessed by one process so you can monitor a port for unsolicited input from that port but you cannot monitor a ports communication with another program, like a terminal server or other RS232 communications server or proprietary program controlling a device via a com port. To be useful for me it needs to be able to either truly just monitor a port opened by another program or have a comprehensive scripting language to send controlled, formatted data to the com port it opens and owns and monitor and interpret the data returned by the RS232 device.
Utility is very limited and can be mimicked by any Serial terminal emulator anyway.. like good old depreciated hyper-terminal or Putty.
