Jade food theme [for Android]

The Chinese proverb “jin yi yu shi (锦衣玉食)” figuratively describes an extravagant lifestyle. Although “yu shi (玉食)” can be directly translated into “jade food”, the proverb is in no way suggesting the eating of jade. Nonetheless, artist Zi Peng gave a literal spin to this popular proverb. With a hyperrealistic style, he painted a series of jade carvings shaped as food items. A clear and shiny texture is accurately depicted, as if the paintings are actual jade pieces. Upon taking a closer look, one would notice that the misty patterns on the jade are in fact images from classic Chinese landscape paintings.

Hamburgers and hotdogs are some of the fast food items prominent in modern Western culture. Jade is seen as an exquisite and attractive gemstone in not just China but the whole of East Asia. It is an indication of eminent status and taste, as well as cultural heritage. Landscape paintings further highlight a traditional Eastern emphasis. Zi Peng was able to combine these elements into his artworks. He has shown us his outstanding hyperrealistic skills and the profound understanding artists have on Eastern-Western cultural exchanges in light of globalization.
