Reviews for Corel AfterShot 3
My rating is only an initial one. This version seems “stripped down” there are a lot of filters & utilities that you can install as a download from the Corel site, but most of those “add ons” are only 32 bit while the program itself is only 64 bit. and of course there is the Big button to upgrade to the “pro” version. For a while Corel was “neck & neck” with Adobe – CorelDraw, CorelPaint & great typography utilities but sadly the Adobe machine out muscled it…. Whether this starts to “regain the crown” I am not sure.
It is evident that Adobe Photoshop is still king when it comes to matters photo editing. However, if you have been actively looking for an alternative, then you must have across a couple or genuine contenders. In my case, Corel AfterShot 3 was my first alternative. I went ahead and tried it out and here is what I found.
Overview
This latest version of Corel AfterShot featured a major update as it now supports 64-bit systems. Apart from being a photo editor, the tool gives different photo management tools. Right from the get go, one of things that stands out regarding this package is its impressive editing features.
Before you are able to access the editing features, you will have to go through the downloading and installation process. The processes would smoothly work for you if you have stable internet connection as well as enough disk space on your machine. While novice users might take time to find their footing, pros will gladly hit the ground running.
Pros
Improved Photo Editing Tools
As I was using Corel AfterShot 3, it was clear that it could be a worthy replacement for Photoshop and Lightroom. That was my take especially based on the new and updated editing tools and features. To start with, the Blemish Remover quickly became one of my most used tool as I was dealing with a bunch of images that required facial touchups.
With the latest version of Corel AfterShot, the circle, polygon, brush, and freehand tools also got a nice touch of improvement. As a result, I also found them helpful in terms of removing unwanted objects like smudges and spots on photos and fine-tuning them for a detail-oriented eye.
Flexibility in Using Filters
With the increasing use of photo-sharing apps, filters have gained a lot of attention as well. Thankfully, this software goes ahead to try give you flexibility in what filter you want to apply but with that professional touch. You can browse and preview the in-app Image Preset Library or opt to download extra filters.
Interesting Twist to Photo Editing
If you have already Lightroom, the you would find Corel AfterShot 3’s approach to photo editing somehow off the map. However, in no time, it will become free-flowing. The program does not import photos as you perform various editing tasks. As such, you will end up with an unchanged photo but with a new XMP file.
It is this file, which is created with each new editing session, that you keep track of the editing a photo has had. After finding the approach confusing in the beginning, I later appreciated it as it allowed me to easily coordinate with others in editing photos.
Cons
Requires Time to Learn
Corel AfterShot 3 has a different way of implementing photo editing tasks. The approach, which involves the creation of a unique XMP file every time you start editing a photo may require some time for both novice and pro user to familiarize with.
Less Developed Color Filter Function
If you wanted to play around with a photo by converting it to black and white, you would not be able to do it in Corel AfterShot 3. This is a feature that potentially deducts score points from the application especially in terms of color filters.
Verdict
Corel AfterShot 3 is worth a try as an alternative to the dominant Lightroom. It packs a good collection of features that also execute fast. You will definitely enjoy the professional experience that this application presents.

You said, “If you wanted to play around with a photo by converting it to black and white, you would not be able to do it in Corel AfterShot 3.” If you watch the tutorial video, it shows that you CAN change photos to black and white.
While Adobe might be the reigning champion in the photo editing software arena, there’s still a couple of other solutions that take a different approach to the problem and give your photos a professional touch faster clever algorithms and editing procedures. Corel and its AfterShot suit series has always been this alternative for years. I was quite optimistic when installing AfterShot Pro 3 since I have used and loved the previous edition of AfterShot.
This latest version of AfterShot Pro features faster processing speeds and has a couple of new tools that make photo editing faster and simpler. This RAW processor focuses more non-destructive in image editing and organization.
Pros
A Subtle Accommodation for Pros and Beginners
AfterShot Pro 3 feels welcoming at a glance. The single screen editing approach and an intuitive UI makes it easy to focus on what you are doing. This with well-arranged tabs to access different plugins makes controls as modular as they are easily accessible. This gives it the powerful allure of compartmentalization, meaning that the features won’t overwhelm beginners but will still be there when the professional needs them.
A Strong Set of Editing Tools
The editing tool set is where all the magic happens. Dedicated edit tools focused on doing everyday photo edits, somethings you will have to do in other pro editing tools makes AfterShot Pro 3 quite the delight. The heal/clone brush, red-eye removal, blemish corrections and other exposure, white balance and color editing tools contribute to its irresistible appeal to both beginners and professionals who would love to automate every day editing.
Quick Image Rendering
As a RAW file processor, AfterShot Pro 3 still has to render your images before you can save them. AfterShot 3 exports to JPEG at 90 percent quality level was generally fast, and the result quite impressive. This will come in handy if you are dealing with multiple photos, something you will do every now and then bearing in mind that AfterShot Pro 3 allows batch processing where you can apply global edits to multiple photos.
Watermarking and Metadata Editing
Editing file metadata and adding watermarks is a plus if you fancy adding more than just looks to your photos.
Cons
Doesn’t Import Photos
While AfterShot Pro 3 offers an illusion of file management yet it doesn’t automatically import the photo and work on the actual file. The software creates XMP files related to the photo meaning that for anyone to continue editing, he or she must have the XMP and the RAW image. Though this is meant to be convenient, I still find the idea of keeping an independent XMP and RAW or JPG file cumbersome.
Scrolling Could be Catastrophic
This is a pesky bug but it messed up my settings a couple of times. Scrolling with the mouse wheel could adjust values you didn’t want to touch. Scrolling alters the value of whatever you are hovering over. This is convenient but still a nuisance to anyone who hasn’t mastered this yet.
Verdict
AfterShot Pro 3 is fast in a couple of rendering scenarios and has quite the catalog when it comes to one touch photo editing. It is perfectly suited to both beginners and professionals and its plugins engines means that there’s always something new to do no matter your skill levels.

Note: this offer is for AfterShot 3, not for AfterShot Pro 3 as described in this review. Not all AfterShot Pro 3 features will be available. Unfortunately, Corel doesn’t seem to publish a list of differences between the low-cost version and Pro version.
Corel is as renowned as Cyberlink for stripping out an existing product and offering it on a free promotion. There is no commercially-sold Corel AfterShot 3. The only version offered is Corel AfterShot 3 PRO. I’ve been caught out before by Corel, using one of its promotional products only to find that what I’d hoped to be able to do wasn’t possible. It’s a real discouragement to downloading Corel giveaways; the developer could at least make clear which features have been disabled and which have been left intact.
