Is Your Child on Track? Reading Together to Support Comprehension and Fluency
by Bonnie Campbell Hill and Carrie Ekey

Parents of elementary school students have two basic questions:
“How is my child doing as a reader?” and “What can I do to help?”

It’s a challenge to answer these questions and explain literacy development in content-packed back-toschool nights or during a thirty-minute parent–teacher conference. The new app Is Your Child on Track? Reading Together to Support Comprehension and Fluency can help.

Adapted from Bonnie Campbell Hill’s parent guide Supporting Your Child’s Literacy Learning, this app will
• Help parents understand the path their children will take in developing as readers
• Show parents how to support their child’s growth and encourage their love of reading
• Bolster parent support for their school’s literacy program
• Improve family–teacher communication

Is Your Child on Track? Reading Together to Support Comprehension and Fluency provides parents with clear and detailed methods for helping their children grow as readers. Organized around seven stages of reading development: preconventional (ages 3–5), emerging (ages 4–6), developing (ages 5–7), beginning (ages 6–8), expanding (ages 7–9), bridging (ages 8–10), and fluent (ages 9–11), this app customizes reading support to a child’s reading ability.

Each stage of reading development provides a menu of support options:
1. STAGE A video description of a typical child in that stage
2. STANDARDS A list of reading standards for that stage
3. MODELS Videos of reading conferences with children in each stage demonstrate for parents how to discuss books with their children and how to help them when they struggle with reading
4. PRACTICE Guidelines for discussing books with children, and
5. SUGGESTED TEXTS A list of suggested readings with comprehension questions.

“For a child, learning to read is like learning to ride a bike. He needs you to show him how. Then you support him as he tries on his own while you run alongside holding the seat. Finally, he bursts away riding solo down the street. The same is true in learning to read—he needs a model, then guidance, which builds his confidence so he tries more difficult tasks. This app will guide parents in supporting their children through this learning process.”
