GuestCan this do a simple drive mirror, without creating a zip?
And if so, are all file and folder creation dates copied accurately to give a 1:1 clone?Andreas Stroebel
Guest[@Bob] No, it’s a simple file backup software. Zip format is obligatory in the software.
If you want 1-to-1 copy/sync features, you can alternatively try Synchredible: https://www.ascompsoftware.com/en/products/synchredible
TK
Guest[@Bob] synchredible won’t suffice for you as it does not preserve file creation date and ACL’s and alternate data streams etc on restoration from the sync destination, you require drive imaging tools and they are notoriously unreliable on live systems no matter the tweaks to use VSS and proprietary systems. reliable drive mirroring should be done offline using a bootable version of the software using either a linux port on a liveUSB/CD or WinPE based system.
TK
GuestAs usual for most backup tools it does not include cloud API access and relies upon enumerated local folder mirrored to the cloud by local clients that can be accessed by ransomware so is pointless at backing up in the event of ransomware attack. Ok it does have FTPS support but that is an expensive option, most web hosting options while they do offer FTP they do not normally offer FTPS and it is usually against their terms to use it for private storage FTP server instead of a web server… You could rent a dedicated virtual server but it’s unlikely you’ll be relying upon cheap/giveaways if you can afford to rent a dedicated virtual server to get FTPS access to secure online storage.
Andreas Stroebel
Guest[@TK] That’s not correct! Synchredible preserves file creation timestamps and (if activated) ACLs.
TK
Guest[@Andreas Stroebel] how does it backup what it does not have access to by ACLs? How does it change ACLs when it’s not even running as an elevated user let alone trustedinstaller pseudo user. The claim:
“Copy NTFS attributes
Adjusts the permission for the destination file and destination folder of the source file and source folder and copies alternate data streams (ADS).”I think they meant to say:
“Adjusts the permission for the destination file and destination folder to that of the source file and source folder and copies alternate data streams (ADS).”
has a BIG disclaimer!
“Important Notice: This option applies only to data storage device that are formatted with the NTFS file system!”
That means even if they are able to flawlessly duplicate all the ACL/ADS and all timestamps on pure NTFS systems, which I doubt, it won’t work if your destination media is not NTFS formatted in a similar version. e.g. an exFAT USB storage device or a mapped cloud folder or a mapped SFTP folder or a mapped network drive. Offline drive imaging software can reliably backup the entirety of the drives data and even deleted data and VSS store etc to any filesystem capable of holding the image file in its entirety or in compatible chunks in the case of a limited filesystem like FAT32 file systems.
I was not able to test their claims as their free standard version would not let me use it unless I registered with them first. Again although they support use of VSS to sync old shadowcopy versions of a file currently open I have seen programs relying upon VSS to copy files in use fail, VSS is not foolproof, the VSS store can become corrupted accidentally and can be maliciously damaged, only safe way to sync files is offline, online sync/copy is always a potential compromise.
Synhcredible cannot do a system drive mirror, too many folders are out of reach without mutilating their ACLs and stripping windows of layers of security, synchredible thankfully cannot do that!

Guest[@TK] Synchredible (and even BackUp Maker) by default starts with highest privilegs, using Windows Task Planner. VSS option is activated by default.
And yes, the purpose of both softwares it to make data-backups, not system images. I just didn’t want to leave the statement that file timestamps and ACLs are not adopted. They are adopted, if options are activated and – of course – the permissions are available and the destination is capable of these data; for timestamps, it’s not an issue at all. For ACLs, it’s another story.
TK
Guest[@Andreas Stroebel] Neither Synchredible or Backup Maker Pro or standard start with highest rights by default but only when auto-started at login or boot up which is the default setting but not the default starting mechanism which is by shortcut or double clicking on the executable. Then there is no rights elevation at all.
Not all filesystems support timestamps to the same detail as windows resulting in errors in conversion e.g. linux NAS boxes. Ascom claim adoption with provisos of when it wont work.Bob
GuestI’m getting this error trying to post a reply that is not showing up here.

GuestIf you want 1-to-1 copy/sync features, you can alternatively try Synchredible
Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately, that’s not compatible with Windows XP.
And thanks to TK for the insights. -
