Unfortunately the above description and Malik’s review are misleading regarding this giveaway version. This “Basic” version “comes without any optimizations, our 2D to 3D conversion and without DVR support” (from their website). You must purchase the “Premium” version to get these more useful features, otherwise the “Basic” version is just that, and there is nothing to make it stand out from the crowd.

About the registration hassles; this is a product from Engelmann and their products have a habit of “phoning home”, each time you launch them and what’s worse, if you deny them this suspicious act, by blocking the app from connecting to the internet, the program wont start fully, will close itself or freeze, only to be turned off by the Taskmanager. And if you write to them complaining about your FULLY & properly registered product not functioning because of this, you will NEVER ever get a reply from them. They just ignore you and continue with their suspicious acts and products. So, beware, before you install any Engelmann poroducts.

Installer says “You must agree to our license terms before installing the product”. I clicked the link and it takes me to their home page. I looked for license terms there, none could be found. Searching their help page for “license terms” did not find them. I think it’s against German law for a German company to not share its licensing agreement? What is Engelmann hiding?
I went through the installation options and found it very confusing to pick the folder where I wanted to install (hint, it’s much easier to create the folder first and then try to install into it).
Reading about the email required during registration brought back bad memories of Engelmann in the past. I got lots of emails from them, and there was no way to shut them off. They may have changed their tactics, I don’t recall seeing anything in the past several months.
Also, it sounds like I can ONLY use the output formats they provide with no customization. I wanted to run this to verify, but overall decided it’s not worth the trouble to me. I have other converters that work well.
While on their home page I found another interesting program (“First Aid”) but apparently there’s no way to buy it. Same for the full version of MyFormatConverter, they talk about selling it on different size USB sticks but don’t show prices for anything but the smallest, clicking the button to buy takes me to a page with nothing useful and no way to buy. Maybe it’s just the Chrome browser messing up their web pages, but I have a very poor impression (and worse memories) of Engelmann. Maybe your luck will be better!
