La Fisiognomia té més de 3.000 anys d'antiguitat —els xinesos l'anomenaven Miang Xiang o l'art de llegir els rostres—, però ha estat observada i practicada per nombrosa gent de ciència, fins al punt que ha esdevingut una pseudociència anomenada Psicomorfologia que el psiquiatra francès Louis Corman (1901-1995) ja va descriure el 1937 i que avui està reprenent una certa volada per les seves aplicacions pràctiques en el món dels negocis, en la selecció de personal i en la criminologia.
De sempre s'ha dit que el rostre és el mirall de l'ànima. Per tant, la zona del rostre que destaqui en alçada sobre les altres dues ens informarà del predomini Mental, Afectiu o Sensitiu del caràcter de la persona analitzada. Ara bé, encara que una zona sigui predominant, també s'han de prendre en consideració els elements continguts en les altres zones.
A més, en un rostre poden destacar-hi al mateix temps dues zones amb la mateixa alçada; i, en el cas no massa freqüent que les tres zones siguin equiparables o ben iguals, es tractarà de persones especialment equilibrades psíquicament.
