Reviews for Hide Files 8
Very good, easy to use, small but powerful. I recommend it to all users
Nothing substantial to add to my review of 2018
but
that the best they did since than is evolving their version numbering, as you can watch here:
https://vovsoft.com/version-history/hide-files/
This does NOT encrypt the files at all. It merely renames them with the db suffix and moves them to another folder named VVSFTFLDRHD.
So let us assume the original file was a video file named test.mp4. After the “locking” procedure all that happens is the file is moved to VVSFTFLDRHD and named with a number, eg 12.db But it remains the same file except for the name and suffix.
Now simply change the suffix back to mp4, ie 12.db becomes 12.mp4 (name does not need changing), and hey presto the video opens and thus is clearly accessible. The same principle can be used for jpg, doc etc. If someone does not know the original suffix, but are determined, all they need to do is try a few suffixes , eg try mp4, jpg, doc etc until the file opens.
This is a very nice program to use – the interface is well designed – and everything is easy to operate. Such a pity that it is so very very easy to crack.
Sadly therefore this program gets a thumbs down since it does not really serve the purpose. And I’m an ordinary user and not a hacker!

there is an option to encrypt files via edit menu
LINUX go otworzy !
NOTE: Especially for computers that you share with others it is a very bad idea to use this tool! ( @MALIK …)
Reading my other (main) review you can bet:
Sooner or later the co-worker(s) on those computers will stumble about this “strange (and interesting?!) folder” and will take a look at its content.
Better use encrypted containers, or use encrypted archives with common packers: almost all of them support password protection. Some of them even let you choose the encryption method/strength!
@Malik
Don´t know whether to laugh or to cry…
Took me just about 10 seconds to realize how it works:
1. renamed the “Hidden” folder to another name
2. set attributes of this folder to h (hidden) and s (system
3. moved this folder to the drive´s root.
4. renamed all files inside this folder to nnnn.db (nnnn for numbers – beginning with “1”…)
BUT: ALL FILES COULD FREELY BE ACCESSED.
viewing those files would instantly show their type (archive, text, exe/dll, etc.)
So again: (as all of?!…) such software is ridiculous – at least for any halfway experienced computer user.
:-(
Better than average:
– those folders are and stay in the same state (“Hidden”, name scrambled, …) in and for any other OS or Windows instance.
– you must have at least the idea that there IS suchg folders/files.
Worse than average of those tools:
– you have direct access to all files, as soon as you find out about the existence of such files/folders.
– not even any need to reboot to save mode (… or Windows PE or Linux …)

Did you download and install this software and check your theory? Did you attempt to encrypt the files? Interesting review, but a tad incomplete
Sharing a computer with other users means, all your files, folders, and data is accessible to them too. It is not an easy task to hide or keep private your data from other users. Windows does allow you to hide files/folders, but they are just hidden and are still accessible to pretty much anyone using the PC. That is why, many applications have been developed that allow you to lock and hide your files/folders, so that they can be only accessed by you.
Hide Files is a simple application, designed to help you lock and hide your files from other users of the PC. It lets you hide important files or folders, and prevents other users from accessing them without the right password.
Installation & Set-up
The installer size is ~1MB, and the installation process is simple and straightforward, taking no time at all to complete. The version provided here comes pre-registered and activated for use. Other versions can be activated using the license keys. Launching the application for the first time, it asks you to create a Master Password and also enter a recovery email, in case you forget the password. Once done, you can then start using the application and lock down your files, folders, and even drives.
User Interface
The UI of the application is clean and intuitive, and should be easy to use for all types of users without any difficulty. At the top is the menu bar with usual drop down menus, followed by a toolbar with buttons to important features. The rest of the area shows the content you add to the application to be locked. You can add files, folders, and even drives to be locked. You can also unlock them, and remove them from the application. Password and recovery email can also be changed.
Pros
– Simple and easy to use UI, designed for all types of users.
– Protect files, folders, and drives by locking them secured by a Master Password.
– Recovery email, in case you forget your Master Password.
– Locks data of any size within seconds.
– Supports drag and drop of files and folders to the application.
Cons
– No option to automatically lock the data or the application after a duration of inactivity.
– Does not offer any advanced option, so that might be an issue for a few users.
Conclusion
Hide Files is a simple tool to lock and protect your important files, folders, and drives. It does not offer much advanced options, but it does its job well. The application runs smoothly without any lag or crashes. It is definitely worth trying.

Best solution is not to put sensitive information on the computer. If you need to have it available, use a thumb drive no one else has access to.
