Reviews for Silver Key
Useful and well running program. I like it for securing my files that I want to protect and also specially for files that I want to share, like when I want to email, just remember to share the password in a different method than your email, maybe by texting or telephoning.
Thanks for providing this good and practical program.
Nowadays, data security and privacy has become one of the biggest issue of this world. Data can be stolen, deleted, modified, or misused if it gets into the preying hands. Encryption is the solution to this problem, it allows you to securely protect data that you don’t want anyone else to have access to. Encryption helps protect private information, sensitive data, and can enhance the security of communication between users, apps, and servers.
Silver Key is a software application, designed to help you encrypt and decrypt files to secure them while you send them or share them with other on the internet. Wizard guided processes make all the tasks easy to understand and perform without any prior knowledge.
Installation & Set-up
The installer size is ~17MB and the installation process is simple and straightforward, taking no time at all to complete. At the last step of installation, you can enter your license info to activate or start your trial license. Once done, you can choose to launch the quick start guide along with the application, and start using it.
User Interface
The UI is very simple and plain, containing only 13 buttons, along with their descriptions, categorized under three categories, namely Encrypt, Decrypt, and Miscellaneous. The buttons preset are, namely Encrypt, Make Hidden, Encrypt Job, Web Silver, Designer, Decrypt, Analyze, Verify, Shredder, Settings, New Key, Command Line, and Group. Almost all the buttons lead to wizard guided processes, meaning that you are going to receive tips at every step. This makes the application easy to use for even the novices and people with no prior knowledge of encryption and data security. It only takes a few simple steps to get the job done.
Features
This application can encrypt files and/or folders, and produce encrypted parcel that can safely be sent over the internet. The receiver does not need any software installed to access the files sent to them. The application adds entries to the Windows context menu, so you can perform task quickly from the easy of Windows Explorer. You can Encrypt, Create EXE Parcel and upload it,and Shred files from the right-click context menu. You can also change the icons of the files that this application creates.
Pros
Wizard-based UI, makes the application easy to use.
Context-menu integration
Create encrypted EXE parcels
Upload to Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive
Low system resource usage
Cons
Have to re-launch the application after every job.
Lags, and stops responding during the parcel creation process.
Conclusion
Silver Key is a reliable application, that can ensure that your data is safe and protected when you share it over the internet. It comes with a lot of advanced features too, that might be too difficult to use for a novice. Wizard guided processes help a lot to simplify the process though. The application works smoothly, with a few lags here and there while processing.
Sorry for late review.
I attempted to do what I wanted with 7-Zip and Ashampoo Zip Pro 2 and Winzip 19
They all were a PITA
What I want is the ability to simply select some files and place them into a self extracting (encrypted) EXE
7-zip was complicated.
Winzip will not allow you to set it the way God intended – User extracts the files into same folder as the EXE
Ashampoo was fairly straight forward EXCEPT it never asked me for the password to protect the file.
Silver Key was much simpler (to do what I wanted), and can extract into the same folder as the EXE (the way God intended).
Thus I give it 5 stars
easy to work with, great staff that are very helpful and friendly
i got it to work
Silver Key
With the ever-increasing concern for security for online users, you do not want to anything for granted. One of the classic areas where you need to be up to speed with ensuring your information is safe is during sending confidential or classified information over the internet. However, you can now have a fall back plan in the name of encryption. Case in point is the Silver Key software that uses AES 256-bit keys to encrypt sensitive files and folders. I tried it out and here is what I found.
After installation, has a pretty straightforward set of Wizards that would help you get started right away. The main wizards for Encryption, Decryption, and Miscellaneous. These main wizards further have sub-wizards to help you accomplish a wide range of tasks based on what you want.
Pros
Can Upload to Dropbox
In the processes of encrypting a file or folder, Silver Key gives you the option to upload the encrypted parcel to Dropbox or just create a self-decrypting executable parcel. If you have Dropbox installed on your machine, you will be able to choose your preferred folder to upload the parcel.
Fast Encryption Process
I realized that Silver Key only allowed me to encrypt a file at a time. Nevertheless, since most of my files are documents, the program was impressively fast in completing the encryption process. This meant I did not have to wait for long for me to move to the next file.
Cons
Wizards Close Down After Every Operation
While using Silver Key, I noted that its Wizards window closed down whether cancel the operation or after encrypting a file. As a result, it meant I had to relaunch every other time I wanted to use it. Such a process is less convenient especially if it involves the same session on your computer without any signing or shutdown.
Lack of a Central Interface
Another caveat about Silver Key that you would note when using it is the lack of a central interface or main window. Instead, the program launches different windows that present you with different options. For instance, if you choose to open the crypto Settings panel under Miscellaneous Wizards, it launches another window for that purpose. In turn, the program loses the expected smooth user experience.
Freezes During Parcel Creation
Once in a while, Silver Key will freeze on your especially when you are creating new Parcels during the encryption process. When that happened, I a short while for it to go back to normal. It is worth noting that, despite the freezing, the program did not crash at any point.
Does Not Encrypt Folders
When you open up Silver Key Wizards, the Encryption Wizard has the option “Encrypt files or folders”. However, I was not able to encrypt any folder using this option. The only work around was to zip the folder first hence making the software less convenient for me.
Verdict
Silver Key comes across as a program that would help boost the security level of your sensitive information using its AES 256-bit keys encryption keys. However, after using it in my operations, I noted that it is not among the best in the market. You could accomplish more tasks within the same interface of WinRar professional or 7-Zip.
Tried this. It’s OK but 7-zip does all this for free. Creates an encrypted compressed container file or exe. Of course you still have to get a pwd to the recipient by some means.
I found myself needing to share sensitive information with a friend and just couldn’t trust sending it over the email then deleting the email. I mean, I’m accustomed to those adverts that appear next to an email –most of the advertising products that are related to what your email is bearing –simply because I have not found a solution to get rid of them yet. The thought of an advert bearing details of my sensitive information affirmed my decision to stay away from sending plain mails, especially when dealing with confidential data and files.
A friend introduced me to Silver Key –prior to that my alternative would be attaching a password to a WinRar folder –and I found it quite usable, especially if you are sending data over e-mail or between portable devices. When launched, the application opens a three-panned interface that is comparable to many e-mail clients. Unlike other encryption software that I have tried using before, Silver Key wowed me with its simple user interface that catered for novices in this field.
Specifications
I learnt that it is even simpler to encrypt and send files without opening the application’s interface. Even better, it has a drag and drop functionality that makes encrypting files very easy. It is not just interface that has been made simple to use; the application allows for easy generation of security keys and even setting a self-extracting executable file. The self-extracting mode will allow the receiver to open the file without using a secure key.
The flexibility and security that this software offers are rare to find in free encryption software. It is light and won’t consume resources during encryption or decryption.
How it works
If you are not familiar with the Silver Key encryption software, I will give you a heads-up. This software allows you to send files securely over the internet. You need the software on your device in order to send the files but interestingly, it is not mandatory for the recipient to have the software so as to view the secured files.
To send a file, simply right-click on it and select Create EXE Parcel. The program will encrypt the data and embed a small decryption program that will be used to decrypt the file once it reaches the recipient.
Pros
Its simplicity and properly arranged commands make it easier for use by novice users. It not only provides a quick solution for sending encrypted data over the internet, but also allows you to create advanced encryption options, create shortcuts of a target computer, and encrypt and decrypt comments. Additionally, the receiver does not need to install the program in order to decrypt a file.
Cons
It lags at times and the complex features took me quite a lot of time to learn and use them.
Conclusion
Silver Key is one of the best encryption software that you will find in the market. It is a definite must-have not only for individuals who want to communicate fast and securely but also for corporates that need to transfer large confidential data.

What is the advantage of having software that encrypts an email message but does not require a password or key to unencrypt it at destination? If the email is intercepted – the possibility (or probability) of which is presumably the reason one would use encryption in the first place – what is to prevent the ‘interceptor’ from reading the encrypted content?
