Or are you always holding back out of self doubt or self criticism?
Human beings have a highly-developed capacity for self-awareness and a very strong tendency to compare themselves with others. These characteristics (among others!) have led them to acquire amazing skills and talents and to create astoundingly complex and sophisticated civilizations. But there is a downside.
Why you might find it hard to trust yourself
When you're very aware of yourself (self-conscious), and very aware of differences between yourself and others ("There are so many people who can do this so much better than I ever could..."), there is a risk that you may hold back from attempting something because you simply can't bring yourself to believe that you could ever make a go of it. Even if, objectively, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to.
And then, if other people make derogatory remarks about what you are capable of, or tell you that you can't possibly do X, Y or Z, you feel confirmed in your self-doubt and become even less likely to take on anything new or challenging.
Believing in yourself is not about being good at everything
Of course, not everyone is good at everything. Or can become good at everything. But everyone can become good at some things. However, in order to discover what you are (or can be) good at, you have to try. And you have to be able to relax with the idea that it's okay to discover that something is not really your 'cup of tea', as the British say, and this doesn't mean that you are a 'failure'.
This is the real key to learning to trust yourself. It's not about arrogant, brash self-belief that you can do anything. It's about being willing to explore what you are capable of, to push and challenge and surprise yourself. And it's about discovering your strengths and developing them and then devoting your energies to where they can be most effectively and satisfyingly put to use.
But how do you get that niggling doubting voice in the back of your mind to pipe down and let you get on with it? Especially if you've been listening to it for years?
Hypnosis can help you build and strengthen your faith in yourself
