Installed the program on Win7 64 bit Lenovo T61p laptop. Registered fine. When I now try to start the program, it just hangs there with the green loading bar moving. Is there a service that should be running for the program to startup? Can I reinstall the program since it is now past the install time?

[@WildCat] What? No edit button?!?! Well if I could edit I would change it to say that I’m getting the error code because I have dual boot OS. Got info from another “cat”. So @StrayCat Thanks for the info and the link! Hmmm… just a thought, but it would have been nice if this bit of info was put in the TECHNICAL DETAILS or SOFTWARE DESCRIPTION. Oh well, guess I’ll keep using Macrium Reflect free. Hasn’t failed me yet!

I haven’t had time to read the other comments, but I see some people seem to have had this problem. It took hours to download this file on a fast Cable internet connection. I tried it more than once and every time the download was extremely slow (I canceled all the downloads except one). When it finally finished, I tried to install the program and it said the .exe file was corrupted, please download again. I’m running Windows 7 Home Pro 64 bit on a fast new laptop. I’d like to try this program, but I see the offer ends in 5 hours. It will probably take that long to download it again based on experience. I hope the manufacturer gets their download act together and re-offers this program soon. I’ve been looking for a good imaging/backup utility.

before we start i have say I except NO RESPONSIBILLITY to what happens to your computer or any other computer you may try this on now that is said we can start

you can use windows powershell to backup of your windows 8 or 8.1 heres how go to the right side of your screen and get the windows charms bar and click on search in the search bax type powershell you will see it in the list right click it and run it as administrator powershell will open you will see a blinking cursor copy this code wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:H: -include:C: -allCritical -quiet
at the blinking cursor, what the code means wbAdmin starts the windows image, backuptarget :H is the drive destination of the buckup to saved, include:c this is the primary of your backup which is usually c drive, and the quiet means stop. this code is case sensitive if you change destination you will have to use upper class letter and no spaces
so if you are going to change the destination change the H to the drive you want then paste it in to the powershell then hit enter if you paste it right the windows will start backing up your drive. you can use any drive to backup hard drive or thumb drive , cd or dvd just use the drive letter to those drives, but if you use cds or dvd you may need a lot of cds and dvds it depends on what you have instaill on your system i suggest you use a spare hard drive or a thumb drive.

Ashraf – You should create discussions of these programs you offer in the Dottech forums and post the link to encourage your readers to comment on them.
I installed and activated this program yesterday, after the expiration date, with no problem. It’s not the cleanest install and there are several directories created outside of the program directory. Dcboot is one. Some look like they repeat files already installed . I couldn’t find any registry strings or activation files until I read on another board that if you copy these two files created by Total Recovery Pro in the Windows\System32 directory, you can reinstall the program.

    VFsActitvation
    VFsRegister

The first file name spelling is correct. Farstone spells “Activation” wrong.

I’m sure this is good, but it has now taken 20 minutes to download and not finished yet, so I’m not going to be able to activate it, the deadline has passed. Pity you didn’t warn us how large it was. :-(

  37. Mikerman

    Reply to this comment#37OLD COMMENT

Installed without issue on my Win8 system. A super-long download, however–I ended up doing it at my local library, where it only took 20 minutes (as opposed to hours).

Now, a question for you knowledgeable sorts:

What is the primary role for this software? As imaging software, to record an image of your computer for disaster recovery in case of hard drive failure? Or as file-based backup software, to recover specific files? Or, is it a hybrid between the 2?

And while we’re on the topic: why would one use file-based backup over image-based? Shouldn’t one have an image around, for the best protection? Then, what’s the role for file-based backup? Or should one be using both types of backup?

    Thanks–

I think you’re unlikely to get something that what you want and fit your stuff on a DVD. What you need is imaging software such as today’s free offering of FarStone TotalRecovery Pro or Macrium Free, Paragon Backup and Recovery Free, or Drive Image XML. You backup your software to an external drive like a USB drive (an external hard drive, not a USB stick). Then you make a CD/DVD which you can then boot off of when your main hard drive dies. That CD/DVD then restores everything from the USB drive to your main hard drive. You’re back just like you were before. You’re unlikely to fit all your stuff on a DVD unless you have a very small pile of stuff by today’s standards.
