I wonder why software company’s don’t do like Eudora email used to? Have a paid mode and a sponsored mode.
That would solve the OpenCandy issue for most! They would make some money for the sponsored mode and if you didn’t want the ads buy the paid mode. At least you would know what you were getting.

@Rufus: I don’t mind OpenCandy because it is better than other bloatware ad networks due to its opt-in nature. The lesser of two evils, so to speak.

@Dr. Sheldon Cooper: Thanks for the comments! I had updated the checkout process to include information about OpenCandy soon after your first comment, so no worries — I warned people as soon as I learned.

Ashraf – Open the yosetup.exe file with 7zip and you’ll see the $PLUGINSDIR with the OCSetupHlp.dll file, which has a digital signature by Open Candy, Inc. Your Virustotal results in the “Important Info” section of this page also showed 2 programs that mentioned the OpenCandy adware in the program. The 2nd post in this thread from last December mentions it, too:

    http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=338849

I had a longer response that I posted a few hours ago, but it seems to be missing from this page.

@Ashraf: Sound to me like it has OpenCandy by the first comment on this software. I don’t know that for sure but I am not going to download it to find out. I am surprised at your statement about “I don’t mind it”. I have always agreed with you 100% on things but not this time. If they put it in software and don’t let the people know about it, that is wrong to me. If they have it stated up front before installing and you have a choice to install with OpenCandy or decline the software install that would seem fair to me. Is asking to tell the public what is included in the software asking too much. Just my two cents worth.

Ashraf – I’m positive that Open Candy is in the software. Your Virustotal results even indicate it.

Open the yosetup.exe file with 7Zip. and check the $PLUGINSDIR.
You’ll see a file named OCSetupHlp.dll. The digital signature for said file is Open Candy, Inc. What’s amazing to me is how many AV/securty programs don’t consider this adware a PUP. It’s the same two vendors you have listed in your Virustotal description for the program above.

    OCSetupHlp.dll

This thread on Wilders indicates the program has had several free giveaways since March and contained OpenCandy then:
    http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=338849&highlight=opencandy

What exactly does OpenCandy do? Does it create a registry string so that certain ads show on websites one visits?
Does it create a directory if the dll is installed? I used to have more knowledge of it, but it’s been some time since I reseached it.

As this thread indicates. even Imgburn now contains OpenCandy. I’ve just extracted the exe file from the last several bersions rather than install the package, as described here:

    http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=348876&highlight=opencandy

    Winamp also now contains OpenCandy.

@ Dr. Sheldon Cooper: I did not see any OpenCandy when I downloaded and installed the program to test. Odd. Are you sure it has it?

And, on the topic of OpenCandy, I don’t mind it but I would have warned users.

Both Malwarebytes and NOD32 detected Open Candy Adware in the exe package. To the author’s credit, they allow the exe file to be extracted with a simple program like 7zip and indeed Open Candy is in the PLUGINSDIR. folder.

    I have two questions:

    1) Ashraf, do you feel it is enough to just post the Virustotal results and not mention that Open Candy is included, or do you feel that Open Candy is just a benign type of adware?

    2) Why are all the other AV programs ignoring Open Candy?
