Marraskuussa 1945 Helsingin Säätytalolla käynnistyi Suomea kuohuttanut sotasyyllisyysoikeudenkäynti. Syytettyinä istui presidentti Risto Rytin johdolla kahdeksan Suomen kohtalosta sotavuosina päättänyttä miestä. Muuta vaihtoehtoa Suomella ei ollut. Neuvostoliiton johtama valvontakomissio pelasi kulisseissa kovaa peliä ja veteli naruja väkevästi haluamaansa suuntaan.
