Quick and cute function, no installation, ugly presentation.

Must go to options to pre select what folders to search, makes it awkward to iteratively search different locations, such as searching other computers on the network.

Once I ass a network folder, it slows way down.

I look forward to more from new-to-me programmer Morten Kirsbo.

    Thanks.

    Windows 7 64.

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for your feedback! Regarding the looks, I’ll be adding theme support in the future, to allow different and more personally appealing appearances.

As for network drives: Yeah it’s very slow – Commodore works best on local files/folders at the moment unfortunately. I’ll be trying to make it faster on network drives as well.

Again thanks for the constructive feedback, and I do hope you enjoy the app regardless :-)

    Have a good day.

    Best,
    Morten

Sounds like it uses the same NTFS-index search technique as the free program Everything, so it would have the same advantages (fast search, index already built and maintained by NTFS file system) and disadvantages (only file name/extension searchable, only works with NTFS file systems). But it offers a portable version, which is a nice plus, although I’m not sure how that is consistent with the “1 computer” giveaway license restriction.

    Hmmm…. $25 normally? Ouch

Go with Search Everything… it’s beyond excellent. It’s free.
I’m totally addicted, use it for Everything, no pun intended. Does local NTFS, and any folder on your network. Set it up once. Done. Instant access.

The BEST tool I’ve ever used. Free.

    Hi there,

Have you got Microsoft’s .Net framework latest version (4.6.2) installed? I think it’s in the system requirements but might not be very visible. Anyway you can download it from: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet-framework-runtime/net462

With this installed, Commodore should work! Thanks.

    Hi Felix,

The search mechanism doesn’t use the NTFS index actually. It creates a new local index in memory, every time the app is started. You can search for any part or combinations of a path and filename, but it doesn’t search inside text files for example. If I remember right, the app Everything can search inside files. I deliberately did not include this feature, as it gives too many results, and mostly false-positives really. Hence why it searches exclusively on file name, extension and path.

By the way, it’s a kind of fuzzy search, so you don’t have to be exact when searching for file names. For example searching “pdf receipt”, will find any file with receipt and pdf somewhere in the file name, extension or folder names. So it will find and show PDF files in a \Receipt folder, as well as it will find/show “Laptop receipt.pdf” in whatever folder.

As for the license, I guess the license terms on the site is a bit unclear. But basically you can install it on all your PC’s and on a USB stick. You just can’t install it / copy it to computers that aren’t yours.

    Thanks for trying it out!

    Best,
    Morten

    Hi Ed,

The app’s just been launched, so I’m trying to find the pricepoint. For now it’s $25 but it might be lower later. Regardless, during the promotion it’s free, so not anything you guys need to worry about :-)

    Best,
    Morten

    Hi Jean,

That’s odd, I haven’t experienced the problem during testing (and we did a lot of testing on Windows 8 with a couple of testers). But! It’s also the first time the app is distributed to so many people at once. So it’s likely there are some system configurations which gives the program some trouble for one reason or the other.

If you would like to, I’d be happy to try and see if we can get it fixed. But it might take some back and forth communication. If you like, you can write me on [email protected] and we can take it from there.

    Best,
    Morten

The speed of network drives is not under your control.

What is under your control is the awkwardness of requiring us to take so many steps to tell your program to browse to and scan a network drive.

Like Microsoft’s Windows File Explorer, it makes sense to be able to see a location tree on the left ( perhaps with it’s own address bar for our direct entry of locations to search, such as typing [ \\102.168.1.37 ] or [ \\Joanie ] for a computer that does not appear in Microsoft’s own networking listing ).

Then perhaps a collection of preferred / remembered / frequent locations that stay and refresh on display above that on the left ( instead of hidden in the options ).

Then on the right side, a search entry on top, and any search results below.

    Like this:
    ______________________________________________________________________________________

    Where to search: [ ][ Go ] _____________________ Search for or what: [ ][ Go ]
    ______________________________________________________________________________________
    .
    .
Results of each [ Go ] underneath, one on the left, one on the right.

Your users at least fall into 2 categories:

    — search for what, where?

    or

    — search where, for what?

Resulting in 2 completely different user expectations of how they will look for controls in your program user interface.

So, combine at least those 2 user groups rights on screen.

So far, your presentation does not differentiate your program much from the popular free Voidtools [ Everything ] search program, see:

    https ://w ww. voidtools. com/support/everything/

Enjoy programming now ( later, it will be the marketing and then the finances that become the real challenge ! ).

Thanks for sharing your programming resources.
    __________

PS — You need to install any support programs that you depend on, and the program should check that they are there when the program starts, and offer to reinstall the missing support resources automatically.
