Reviews for Luminar 3
Skylum, publishers of this software, originally designed it for the Mac. Then a couple of years ago it produced a Windows version. The version offered here is the first of those, and thus in no way is comparable to the Luminar 4 2020 product release, which provided good value for its many and varied abilities.
Giving away Luminar 3 now is clearly a ‘sell-up’ attempt to stimulate sales of Luminar 4, which are floundering now that Skylum has made the senseless mistake of appearing to launch an “all-AI” replacement for Luminar 4, thereby provoking justifiable outrage amongst the more recent purchasers of version 4 who think what they’ve bought is actually an obsolete product which will no longer be developed.
I paid for Luminar 3 when it came out after using Skylum’s first Windows version (given away free) but found it slow, buggy and under-developed, as if the transition from Mac to Windows had been too much for the developer. And I’m not at all sure about the over-used term ‘AI’, because Luminar 3 does NOT “learn” anything from what its user does (a learning process is the very definition of “AI”).
AI has been devalued to the point of being just another stupid marketing term; certainly, Luminar 3 isn’t in any way “intelligent”, rather a series of pre-set effects devised by the developer which can then be modulated by user-chooser slider controls.
(It’s the ability to vary the percentage intensity of those effects which always marked Luminar out as a class above the many “one-click photo editors” out there. Luminar 4 was a quantum leap forward, hence why it looks like this giveaway is there to bring more users into the Skylum fold at a time when the publisher has shot itself in the foot over Luminar 4 sales. To Skylum’s credit, it does run a helpful user forum.
Just ignore all the baloney about A.I. this and A.I. that: none of it is true. And be careful, if you’re tempted by the discount price for Luminar 4 which Skylum will undoubtedly and immediately offer you as a registered user of Luminar 3, because until the actual future of Luminar 4 is made crystal clear by Skylum — is it dead? Has the latest un-named Luminar offering completely replaced it? What’s going on? Etc etc etc — you may live to regret your choice.
