À l’image de Kant dans les Fondements de la métaphysique des mœurs John Stuart Mill s’empare de la question morale. Mais si chez Kant la règle de la moralité se découvre dans la solitude du sujet pensant, chez Stuart Mill elle surgit de l’interaction sociale. Son objectif est clairement affiché : faire naître une nouvelle société nourrie aux mamelles de l’utilitarisme, fonder un ordre nouveau permettant au plus grand nombre d’accéder au bonheur, saper les fondements des croyances qui nous empêchent de construire un monde meilleur. Il ne s’agit pas de construire une pure utopie mais de suivre un programme rationnel.
Premièrement, comprendre que l’utilitarisme ne vise, en définitive, que le bonheur du plus grand nombre.
Deuxièmement, nous convaincre de la pertinence de cette théorie. Pour se faire il ne cherchera pas à remonter à des principes métaphysiques fondateurs mais se contentera de démonter patiemment tous les autres systèmes afin de nous conduire à admettre que l’utilitarisme est la meilleure théorie au regard de la raison.
Troisièmement passer de la théorie à la pratique : à l’image des religions qui ont structuré en profondeur les mœurs des sociétés ou de la notion de progrès scientifique qui a progressivement renversé l’ordre religieux, John Stuart Mill souhaite utiliser l’éducation des masses pour que la force de l’habitude parvienne, au bout du compte, à modifier durablement nos idées morales et nos modes de vie.
