Pepa Porcupine is excited for his first day of school. But when he gets there, he injures a new friend playing leap frog, and the squirrels are shy to play tag with him. He gets upset and does something rash, but then he meets Andy Armadillo, whose built-in body armor can handle Pepa's edgy side. The moral of the book is that there are friends for everyone, no matter how prickly, as long as you remain calm and patient. Pepa Porcupine teaches children patience, empathy, and understanding of those different than ourselves.
