***Vopt was a commercial program sold by Golden Bow Systems. Howard Barry Emerson, the author of Vopt, recently passed away and dictated Vopt to be made free after his death. Take a moment to thank the man for his generosity.***
Vopt lets you quickly defrag and pack your disk drives to maintain optimal performance and reliability. Vopt’s speed makes daily defragging both practical and desirable. Vopt also provides tools to assist you in maintaining your system, reclaiming wasted disk space, and protecting your privacy.
Vopt offers many different language choices to give you the comfort of working in your own native language.
Main window map
Vopt’s initial main display is a graphic map of the drive showing which clusters are fully used, partially used, and free (unused). After you do an analyze or defrag, the map shows which clusters contain normal files, fragmented files, fixed (immovable) files, excluded files, metafiles, system restore files, startup files, and the hiberfile.
When you click on the map after an analyze or defrag, Vopt displays a window which lists the files using that area. You can drag a file from the list and drop it into a new location on the drive. Be sure to right-click on the list for options — you can even compress, uncompress, encrypt or decrypt files from this window.
Buttons
- Defrag drive – Defragments the currently selected drive.
- Analyze drive – Determines and displays what each cluster of the drive is being used for
- Cleanup – Lets you view and delete cookies, internet history, temporary files, the USN Journal, etc. Cookies you don’t want deleted (“Subscriptions”) can be entered so that you don’t lose access to your favorite web sites when using cleanup.
Defragmenting menu
- Defrag drive (tighter packing) – Performs extra work to reduce the number of small gaps left after defragmenting. This takes more time.
- Quick defrag (VSS compatible) – Files larger than 64 MB are not defragmented, and file packing is minimal.
- Batch defrag – Defragments the multiple drives you select, and turns off the system afterward if you like.
- Defrag pagefile – Defragments the pagefile.
- Exclusions – Lets you exclude files from being moved.
- Schedule – Lets you schedule automatic defragging.
- Advanced settings – Lets you set Vopt’s relative priority and other options for faster defragmenting.
Status menu
Following an Analyze or Defrag, displays important information about the drive.
Health menu
- Check disk for errors – Provides a more informative access to Window’s drive checking facility.
- Drive failure prediction – Checks the drives’ hardware status to ensure that they are in good working order.
- Drive performance – Provides a realistic measurement of actual drive throughput.
Tools menu
The tools menu provides several useful tools for viewing system information and enhancing performance.
Limitations
- Maximum partition size: 16 TB (terabytes) for volumes formatted with a normal 4096 byte cluster size. Larger cluster sizes will increase capacity; smaller cluster sizes will decrease capacity (e.g. 2 TB maximum for a 512 byte cluster size).
- NAS (Network Attached Storage) drives cannot be defragmented, and are not displayed in Vopt’s drive list.

Reviews for Vopt
It does NOT install! When you run the executable, a prompt comes up and says “Vopt.exe is running, please quit the program and click retry to continue”…WTF!
This is a decent program, and one I’ve actually used prior to this give-away. If you use mechanical hard drives (“regular hard drives”) then this is a great tool that does, in my opinion, a better job then the built in Windows defrag tool.
However, if you have an SSD you should not use this program. (There is no need as SSD’s function a bit differently.) Make sure to double check what type of hard drive you have before using this program.
My opinion Is stay right away from this program, there are other free programs that don’t cause or have issues just trying to install then once u actually get it installed and read a little I was just like O.M.G. , It was a very nice gesture from the creator to make it free upon his death but read very carefully before u use it depending on what version of Windows O.S. your using I never did a defrag with it i uninstalled it very quickly. Until some other semi up to date program is on a giveaway use something like Defraggler. Sorry I never normally make a comment even if i think the program is not very good but beware using VOPT just my opinion and if u don’t know anything much about using these programs look up or ask for help or advice before using it what I read in just a minute before being about to try it was like exit and uninstall time right away. Again very generous of the not with us anymore maker of this to make it free but alarm bells where going nuts just in the minute of reading once withing the program itself.

Your comment may have been useful, if you had included a little about what specifically that you read, which bothered you. Tnx
Useless comment without any specific details. You read something “…in just a minute…” and installed right away. And that’s it.
WHAT SPECIFICALLY did you read or see that convinced you to delete it “…very quickly…”???
This is great program. Unfortunately I don’t need just that because SSD-dives does not need to defrag.
i have used several programs and this is the best of them all , simple and efficient , fast considering that it can tightly pack data and defragment at the same operation , it may lack a very fancy user interface and i have never had an error out of it , i highly recommend it no cons out of me

i can;t install this software in my windowns 10 pro 64 bit. It is always said “the program vopt.exe must be closed before continuing. please close the program and click retry to vcontinue.”
very ridicilous! beside, i never install this program before.
dissapoint so much!
As you fill up your drives, you will notice a drop in access speeds. In such situations, defragmenting your local drives will greatly help. The defragmentation process quickly sorts out storage location by ordering data to occupy one contiguous storage location. While looking through the available collection of Disk Defrag tools, I came across Vopt. In addition to urge to try out the tool, I was also inspired by the story behind its author.
At a Glance
The rather easy installation process of Vopt was dented by overlooked bugs. On numerous attempts, I got the prompt to close the program, which was already running, before proceeding with the installation. On running the software, its interface is simple with easy to understand options to get one started.
Pros
Impressive Defragmentation Speeds
I was able to defragment my partitions in a few minutes. The quick defrag option was my preferred one since it is Virtual Switching System (VSS) compatible that reduces overhead operations to take less time and increase operation efficiency. The other thing that made the quick defrag option preferable is its minimal file packing.
Batch and Scheduled Defragmentation
I noted Vopt’s superiority over the native Windows’ defragmentation tool through its batch defragmentation option. Furthermore, using the option was pretty simple. I only needed to select the drives I wanted defragmented and boom, that was it. I preferred to defragment my drives when not using my PC and Vopt had me covered with its Schedule automatic defragging.
Effective Way to Check Drive Health
At any given point, I could quickly check the health status of my drives using the Health option at the top of the main window. In turn, I was able to know which drives were bound to fail or were in good health. This option was also quite helpful since it allowed to check my drives for errors. Since my drives are S.M.A.R.T the Health option was comprehensive in showing detailed information their throughputs.
Cleanup Feature to Boost Privacy
The Cleanup button was my go-to option whenever I wanted to get rid of all traces of my internet browsing history. When I first used the option, it deleted all cookies which meant I had to start over with favorite sites. After specifying such sites as Subscriptions, the Cleanup option cleared all the remaining cookies, temporary files and internet history.
Con
Does Not Support Network Based Drives
When listing drives to be defragmented, Vopt did not live up to my expectation in listing Network Attached Storage drives. In turn, this clearly means I was not able to directly defragment them. I had to detach, defragment, then reattach the drives.
Verdict
Straight up, Vopt is easy to use. Apart from its buggy installation process and occasional freezing during defragging, Vopt would be a good and handy defrag tool to try out. An update with support for NAS drives will make the tool even more helpful.

Can not install.
Error message=Vopt 9
The program Vopt.exe must be closed before continuing. Please close the program and click retry to continue.
I don’t understand?????
Since about one month you are always downloading SoS’ new „download hub“ instead of the program itself as in former times.
I suppose this will be killing SoS as Themida wrapper is killing slowly GiveawayOfTheDay. Greetings to Ashraf!!!!!!
You can only download/access windows programs now from Linux or Android if you can umwrap somehow or are getting direct download address. (I’m still using XP offline!)
In case of Vopt it’s simple:
Go to their site
http://www.goldenbow.com/nuvopt9.htm
and fetch programm including serial etc. even for prior version for Win98 etc. with serial or key file respectively.
By the way: If I allow java script I only get part of comments.
I agree: any use of wrappers (as opposed to direct download of the item) just plain Bites the Big One !! I “excommunicated” CNET when they started doing that crap, some years back. If SOS and GAoTD will be doing this now, I may have to unsubscribe and just turn my back on them. Hope you are listening !
Some discrepancy: contrary to the listed download size of 3.5 Mb., I got a download of 2.2 Mb. Is this correct, or did I get a failed d/l ? If so, I should try to do this again, while you still have it available ?
I believe there are other good (free) defraggers around — so, no biggie if this one does not pan out.
How come this program is already running before it has been installed?
Please explain how to shut it down so that installation can be successful.
Right now, it has the appearance of being a bad joke played by the deceased on the assembled clickers!
