[@tong] On another Paragon freebie giveaway, a SoS member suggested cleaning uninstall any Paragon backup program you had before. Have you tried that?

As the same Paragon Backup & Recovery 14 Compact is offered again, I was hoping that whatever causing the error 1316 last time has been resolved. Well, it’s still there – for Windows XP, anyway! What a bummer!

The following note is to describe what seemed to be an error which I encountered while trying to install the Free Paragon Backup & Recovery 14 Compact on my computers either running under Windows 7 or Windows XP:

Error 1316. A network erro occurred while attempting to read from the file
    C:\Users\Tong\AppData\Local\Downloaded Installations\{B953B664-1756-4381-933E-20AD7764D3D0}\setup_x64.msi

I would appreciate any help or comments on why I got this error and could not complete my installation.

    Hi Ashraf,

I thought you should check out this error message I received when I clicked on the link to download the 64-bit version of this software:

I still managed to DL the software, and MS Security Essentials gives it the all clear, but will wait to run it until I hear back from you.

[@Ashraf] Hey, Boss, any ideas about this network error 1316? I’m still running Vista on a laptop, but haven’t had problems with previous versions of this software. Was hoping to get this resolved before this offer is over. Thanks for all the great deals!

[@Peg] I just tried installing the x32.exe version and received a similar “network error 1316″ while reading the setup.msi. At least I think my old version 12 was not affected by this attempt to update. I hope someone can give us some advice on this issue. (btw, I downloaded the files a 2nd time and got the same results.)

@mikeb – buried in help submenu, looks like need to create account then d/l package from Paragon.

    Building Recovery Media
WinPE- and/or Linux-based recovery environments should be prepared on-site with Paragon’s Recovery Media Builder or Boot Media Builder, which you can download from Paragon’s web site, the My Account section (www.paragon-software.com/my-account/).To know more on the subject, please consult documentation that comes with these utilities.

    [@Godel]

Thanks Godel for giving the brain a nudge. iso found in the ‘iso’ subfolder of prog. Made the boot disc using that. Have not used it for restore or backup purposes but it does boot up ok. Cannot find a way to make from program interface .

Appears that if you have the full paid version you can construct a boot disc based on WinPE. Guess that would not be included in ‘compact’ version.

In version 12 it was under the Tools tab, called Recovery Media Builder.

The 127MB download size implies there’s a linux-based boot program in there somewhere.

Do not see any way to make a Boot disc or USB, am I missing something ?

Without such a boot device it’s not much use.

The pop-up license agreement item 3. below states the following which is confusing, especially the part where it says “An acquisition in the form of the granting of a pay-per-use license entitles the end user to run or use the software on a one-time basis only; further use of the software is not permitted.”

Does that mean I can use it only once? What’s the use if I can use it only once?

    3. Special forms of use
An acquisition in the form of the granting of a pay-per-use license entitles the end user to run or use the software on a one-time basis only; further use of the software is not permitted. The acquisition of the software under the stipulation of a particular term of contract only entitles the end user to use the software until the term of contract expires. The acquisition of a technician license entitles the person in question to use the software on different systems, as long as the software is not used on multiple systems simultaneously. The acquisition of a site license (multi-station license) entitles the end user to use the software on an unlimited number of computers at a particular company site, while the acquisition of a company license entitles the end user to use the software on all computers at all sites of the company. The use of free software from print media or online media allows private use only, unless a separate agreement for commercial purposes of use provides otherwise. Commercial use is not permitted.
