Reviews for McAfee LiveSafe
I have been using McAfee LiveSafe for a few years now on our low powered [read cheaper] systems, today including 2 tablets, a mini-PC, & a 2-in-one — I prefer BitDefender, but like other, higher rated, security software I’ve tried, it’s just too much overhead when starting one of those low end devices. Personally I’ve found McAfee, AVG, & Security Essentials light weight in that respect, but have issues with AVG updating, & Security Essentials is replaced by Defender in 10. A couple of recent zero days targeting Defender are examples of why I’m not a fan of 10’s built-in AV. There might be, probably are other brands of security software that don’t overburden low powered Windows devices, but in the baker’s dozen I’ve tried, that’s what I’ve found.
When it comes to protection, in their latest, April 2017 tests, av-test.org rates McAfee at 4.5/6.0 for protection, based on a score of 97.6% for zero days. For performance it rates 5.5/6.0, & for usability it gets a perfect 6.0/6.0 rating.
When it comes to using McAfee it meets my requirements of having a complete removal tool available, & being able to turn off active scanning when required. OTOH I’m not a big fan of their latest GUI, & I miss the capability to turn off scheduled AV scans — personally I prefer manual control because I can’t say when I won’t be busy on the PC. I do not use its secure search feature simply because that means using Yahoo. I use its web protection because it hasn’t caused me any issues, but that said, I don’t put a lot of trust in their web site rating, since when I looked a while back I couldn’t find any info published on how they determine if a site is safe or not.
While I’m satisfied with McAfee to the point that I’ve got 2 more licenses sitting in the drawer [for when the current license expires], using a new license is a bit of a hassle… McAfee wants you to renew at full price, & to encourage that you cannot add a new license, but instead have to set up or use a different account. With BitDefender I just sign in & add a new license number or key — with McAfee I uninstall the software, sign in with a different account, add the license info, then re-download & install. Once a year it’s not a big deal, but it would be nice to avoid that bit of work.

ISP providers have an affirmative duty to protect their clients, yet most providers (like mediacom) are challenged just to keep the Internet running. Instead of helping users stay private, ISP providers squander individual rights. I have had most of the national providers, none to date deserve to be in business.
Anyway, if they were doing their job much of the malware, viruses and the NSA would be blocked. That is how America is supposed to work.
Moral to the story: Be active to replace the ISP’s and the fed.gov henceforth.
As for the mentioned apps, McAfee, Norton, and Webroot failed in real use long before the attacks became sophisticated as they are today. If the big two were so great why do so many institutions hacked? Anyway, I am leery of anything McAfee, free or not. ©2017
