Die Vermittlung der Waffensachkunde ist eine im § 7 Abs. 1 Waffengesetz geforderte Voraussetzung im Waffenrecht und Schießsport. Sie berechtigt den Besitzer bestimmte Waffen (in der Regel Feuerwaffen) und Munition erwerben zu dürfen, für die vor dem Erwerb ein „Bedürfnis“ nachgewiesen werden muss.
Im Schießsport ist dieses Bedürfnis bspw. nachgewiesen, wenn der Antragsteller beweisen kann, dass er den Sport mit der erlaubnispflichtigen Waffe, die er selbst erwerben möchte, regelmäßig (mindestens einmal im Monat oder achtzehn Mal im Jahr) ausübt.
Sportschützen benötigen vor der Beantragung der Waffenbesitzkarte das Prüfungszeugnis einer bestandenen Sachkundeprüfung ebenso, wie Mitarbeiter in Bewachungsunternehmen oder Sportbootführer, die eine Signalpistole an Bord haben möchten.
Die Sachkunde wird durch einen Lehrgang erworben, der mit einer Prüfung vor einer autorisierten Prüfungskommission endet. Der Lehrgang gliedert sich in einen theoretischen und einen praktischen Teil. Autorisiert für die Durchführung des Lehrganges und die Abnahme der Prüfung sind unter anderem die anerkannten Bezirksschießsportverbände im Deutschen Schützenbund, die nach Richtlinien arbeiten, die die jeweiligen Landesdachverbände vorgeben und die von den jeweiligen Innenministerien genehmigt wurden.
Der theoretische Teil wird mit einer Prüfung abgeschlossen, in der unterschiedliche Fragen aus einem Fragenkatalog des Bundesverwaltungsamtes mit einem bestimmten Prozentsatz richtig beantwortet werden müssen.
Neben Multiple-Choice-Antworten muss die Antwort bei einem Teil der Fragen ausformuliert werden. Eine Musterantwort ist vorgegeben, die wortgenaue Wiedergabe ist jedoch nicht zwingend. Vielmehr geht es um das Erfassen der jeweiligen Thematik. Hierzu dient auch der zum Teil als Erläuterung beigefügte Text in Klammerzusätzen.
Der Lehrgangsteilnehmer braucht dabei nur Kenntnisse für beantragte Waffen- und Munitionsarten nachzuweisen und nur für den Zweck, für den die Waffe benötigt wird (hier zum Beispiel dem Sportschießen). Wer also eine Kleinkaliberwaffe erwerben möchte, braucht keine Kenntnisse für eine Großkaliberwaffe oder einen Vorderlader nachzuweisen.
