Getting Started will help newcomers learn proper etiquette when shopping at the market. Discover how informative the produce signs can be and how to find the end of the line. Did you know it’s taboo to touch produce at some markets? If converting to kilos and grams has you confused we’ll make it easy and provide conversion charts. Navigating French Markets includes helpful tips on what kind of shopping bags are easiest to use, when you should tip and how to pay. Even if this is old hat to you, there may be a hint or two that will make your market experiences just a little bit better!
Eight Shopping sections cover all the basic food groups and more, and are complete with photographs for most of the entries. Fish and shellfish, for example, are listed alphabetically in French with the equivalent English word. If you find “cabillaud” at the market — check the app and you’ll discover that it’s “cod” in English. If you already know what you want in English but need the French word tap the button at the end of the listing for an English-French reference. Plus, most entries give you additional information such as how to prepare and a substitute if what you’re looking for isn’t available at the market that day.
At some point in time you’ll get to the market and then realize you need more spices but can’t remember their names in French. The comprehensive Spice Reference (English-French and French-English) will alone be worth the cost of this app.
Exploring new markets is fun! You’ll find a listing by arrondissement with a map, opening days and Metro connections. There is also a section for markets in the suburbs near Paris — most of which are easy to get to via public transportation. The maps are quite small, since the app is self-contained and does not need an expensive data connection, but if you turn your phone to landscape view (horizontal) the maps become much more legible and will get you from the closest Metro stop to the market.
